Today I visited Woo Salon (우살롱), a great Apgujeong restaurant for a slightly special occasion. I love hanwoo (Korean beef) and often go out of my way to find hanwoo specialty spots, but Woo Salon had a pretty different atmosphere from a typical Korean BBQ place. You eat in a private single room, and a server grills the meat for you, so you can focus completely on the meal! And on top of the hanwoo itself, there was such a variety of side dishes that it felt like slowly working through a course meal — really satisfying.

What the private rooms at Woo Salon Apgujeong are like

From the entrance, Woo Salon Apgujeong felt more like hanwoo fine dining than a typical BBQ joint. You go down a staircase from the street to reach the entrance, and it's all wood tones and soft lighting from the very first step in — calm and upscale. It was quiet overall when I visited, so I was already looking forward to the meal before I'd even sat down.

The layout has rooms split along both sides of a corridor. One of the things I liked most about Woo Salon was exactly that — the private rooms. We were shown to our own separate room, closed off from the other tables, which made it easy to chat comfortably while eating.

Inside the room there was a table, its own ventilation, and a separate space to hang coats — handy for storing your outer layer while grilling meat. There was also a call bell on the wall: a sign explained that if the meat starts burning or anything goes wrong, you press it and staff come right away to sort it out. Since this isn't just a restaurant with wide table spacing but actual separated rooms, it seemed like a great fit not just for family gatherings and dates but also important meals or business meetings.

Corkage-free wine service and the wine list

Woo Salon offers corkage-free service, so you can bring your own favorite wine to enjoy with the hanwoo. They also have their own separate wine and liquor menu. As you can see in the photos, they were running a wine-of-the-month and whiskey promotion too. The wine list had several types of red wine, and honestly, corkage-free is really worth keeping in mind for group get-togethers. If you'd like to bring a favorite bottle to pair with hanwoo, that's a pretty appealing perk.

How the side dishes arrive

Once you sit down, dishes to eat alongside the meat come out one by one. There was quite a range — from tangy palate-openers to a cool soup and spicy sun-dried tomato salad — and I really liked that it wasn't just meat after meat, but dishes coming in between to reset your palate. The grilled cabbage with spicy chipotle sauce in particular was so good I kept going back for more.

Two servings of aged sirloin, grilled tableside by the server

The main event at Woo Salon is the two servings of aged hanwoo sirloin. They bring a large wooden box to the table and open it right in front of you to reveal the smoked meat — a small touch of showmanship that made me feel properly taken care of even before I'd eaten anything. Inside the box, the hanwoo and vegetables were neatly plated. The marbling caught my eye first — thick-cut hanwoo that looked delicious just sitting there. This really is an Apgujeong hanwoo spot that specializes in aged beef. And it doesn't stop at bringing the meat to the table — the server grills it for you directly.

A staff member laid the thick hanwoo on a pan and grilled it for us. At a lot of BBQ places I always worry a little about ruining good meat on the grill, but here, since the server grills it themselves, you don't have to think about it at all — you can just chat and wait. They sear the outside golden brown, then cut it into bite-sized pieces to finish. The cooked meat gets placed on a separate plate so you can eat it at your own pace. Along with the meat, they also grill onion, bell pepper, and kkwari-gochu (shishito-style peppers), which were great to alternate with bites of hanwoo.

There were several sauces and side dishes to go with it too — salad along with garlic, wasabi, and other accompaniments. Good hanwoo dipped in just salt is already great, but switching up the sauce combinations kept the same meat from ever getting boring all the way through. I especially loved putting a little wasabi on top, or combining it with the other sides. And that thick-cut cross-section of hanwoo just looks so good, right? Since the server grills it for you, the doneness is consistent and it's cut into easy bite sizes — genuinely convenient. If you like wine, the vibe here is great for pairing it with hanwoo, so I'd recommend it.

Once everything was laid out together again, it really was a feast! Neatly cut hanwoo, grilled vegetables, naengmyeon, and all the side dishes from earlier.

Yukhoe and mul naengmyeon: a meal that unfolds like a course

Woo Salon's yukhoe (beef tartare) comes with pear, chamnamul (wild herb greens), and egg yolk. Our order arrived alongside everything else — and the yukhoe seasoning was seriously incredible!!! Popping the yolk and mixing it into the tartare, then adding pear and chamnamul, made it even better. The crisp texture of the pear gave it a totally different feel from eating the yukhoe alone. Having a different dish come in partway through made it feel like working through a proper course, one bite at a time.

The mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) came after we'd had our fill of meat, as the meal course continued. As pictured, the naengmyeon arrived with noodles, pear, and meat over a cool broth. After all that meat, one bite of the cold noodles cleared the palate completely — a perfect way to wrap things up. Does anyone else feel like a meal isn't truly finished until you've had naengmyeon after the meat? Haha.

The snow shrimp is cream shrimp piled high with cheese. Last but not least, we tried this cheese-loaded cream shrimp. The crispy batter and tangy cream sauce with cheese kept me reaching for more even after all that meat. Being able to enjoy a whole range of dishes from start to finish, rather than just meat and done, is what really sets Woo Salon apart.

Who should book Woo Salon Apgujeong?

Woo Salon, a great Apgujeong restaurant, is a good choice when you want to enjoy aged hanwoo somewhere a bit more private and relaxed. What stood out most was being able to eat in a private single room, separated from other tables. Having a server grill the hanwoo for you was another plus — no need to worry about the grilling, just focus on the meal and the conversation. On top of that, you get a wide range of side dishes and course-style dishes, and if you like wine, you can make use of the corkage-free service. Whether you want a quiet hanwoo meal, a date, a family gathering, or you're looking for an Apgujeong Korean BBQ restaurant for an important business dinner, this one's worth keeping in mind :)
