These days, whenever I eat out with Ro-eun, I naturally look for places that are not just tasty but also comfortable to eat at with a little one.

This time we went to Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi (두근두근숯불갈비) in the Sizi area of Daegu.

We visited early in the evening and were basically the first customers, which meant we could eat at a relaxed pace. What stayed with me most, though, was the warm atmosphere from the owner and family.

There's no dedicated parking lot, but there was space to park in the alley in front of the restaurant, so we got in without much trouble.

Inside Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi: seating and atmosphere in Sizi

Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi was kept quite clean overall, and there were plenty of tables. The spacing between tables wasn't cramped either, which made it look like a good spot for a family meal.

Since Ro-eun was with us, we took a seat by the pillar in the back, worried we might be in the way of staff carrying charcoal or of other diners.

A baby chair was ready for us too, which made things easy with a small child.

The owner's son made the visit memorable

There was something that stayed with me just as much as the food this visit. Since we came early and were the first customers, the owner's son was there helping his mom.

He brought us water, fetched jaeraegi (green onion kimchi) for us, and served so naturally — it was honestly adorable. Ro-eun kept staring at him too, since she has an older "oppa" figure at home who's a bit bigger than her. We'd brought along some paper and crayons in case she got bored, and he even tried to lend her a sketchbook, which was really sweet.

What we ordered: charcoal galbi for four

That day at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi we ordered charcoal galbi for four people, along with a bottle of Jinro soju.

The marinated galbi wasn't sliced too thin — it had a good amount of thickness, and quite a bit of meat still attached to the bone.

The meat looked fresh, and grilling it over charcoal until nicely browned gave it a subtle smoky note that went really well with the sweet marinade flavor typical of yangnyeom galbi.

Charcoal galbi cooked through and ready to eat

I guess meat really does taste best cooked over charcoal.

Gungchae and myeongi-namul, the unusual banchan at Dugeundugeun

The basic side dishes were more generous than expected. What stood out especially were the gungchae and myeongi-namul (mountain garlic leaves).

Instead of just the usual banchan you see at any meat restaurant, having these special extras made it fun to pair with the meat in different ways.

Self-serve bar where diners can refill side dishes

There was also a self-serve bar, so we could help ourselves to more of anything that ran low.

Wraps and side dishes disappear fast once you're eating meat, so it was nice not to have to worry about asking for refills.

A free fried egg, welcome news when you're with a child

Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi serves a fried egg as standard, which is welcome news for any parent dining with a child.

Ro-eun isn't really into marinated meat, and that day was no exception — she had zero interest in the galbi. But the second she saw the egg, she switched straight into egg-obsession mode.

In the end, she ate her rice mixed with egg. She got through about two-thirds of a bowl of rice that day, and even without touching the meat, the egg kept her well fed. When you're at a meat restaurant with a kid, there isn't always something for them to eat — so having that fried egg was a real relief.

The free sundubu jjigae was the real surprise

If I had to pick the one dish that stuck with me most that day, it would be the sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew).

Complimentary sundubu jjigae served with the meat order

It's the stew that comes free when you order meat — and usually at meat restaurants that's doenjang jjigae. But at Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi, it was sundubu jjigae.

Honestly, I went for the meat and came back smitten with the sundubu jjigae.

Maybe it was partly because I was drinking soju and craved something hot, but after one spoonful of the broth, I couldn't stop going back for more.

Eating a spoonful between bites of meat worked so well — I even found myself thinking I'd want to come back just for the sundubu jjigae haha😅😅

Ending the meal with a yogurt drink

When we finished eating and went to pay, there were yogurt drinks set out by the front counter.

Since they had them ready after our meal, I handed one to Ro-eun, and of course she was thrilled. We wrapped up the meal on a happy note.

The opening event running September 17–30

There was also an event worth knowing about if you're planning a visit. From September 17 to September 30, an opening event is running: soju/beer for ₩2,000, plus one free drink.

They also said that with a verified photo review, you can choose either 1 bottle of soju or beer, or 2 bottles of soft drink, as a freebie. If you're planning to visit, it's worth keeping the event in mind.

Is Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi good for a family dinner in Sizi?

Our table during the charcoal galbi meal with our child

This visit to Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi left me with warmer memories than just having a meat dinner. In particular, the sight of the owner's son helping his mom with serving is still on my mind.

Oh, and they also sell a lunch special menu at midday, so it's worth trying that too. If you're looking for a family-friendly meal with your kid or just want easy charcoal galbi some day, this is a good meat restaurant to check out in the Sizi area of Daegu.
