Gangneung restaurant with gondre buckwheat pancake: Gossi's Donghae

My family of three just got back from a trip to Gangneung. We'd had such good makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) in Gangwon before that this time we wanted to try somewhere new, so let me introduce the place we found :) They sell buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll), which I love, plus buckwheat pancake, and we also had a delicious spicy sundubu kalguksu (soft tofu knife-cut noodle soup).

Why Gossi's, right in front of Gangmun Beach, works with a baby

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu, a famous makguksu spot in Gangneung, sits right in front of Gangmun Beach! It's in a perfect spot — park at the public lot, look around the beach, then come eat makguksu. The parking lot was big and well laid out, so it was easy to get around by car. For families with a baby like us, baby chairs are a must, right? They have them here too, so it's great to bring a baby along. Plus, the 3rd floor allows pets.

This place can seat groups too, so a lot of group customers come by. When I visited, there was even a big tour bus parked outside. I was shown up to the 2nd floor — can you see the view? It's absolutely insane. Since we had the baby with us, we gave up the coveted 2-top window seat with the view, haha. If you go, definitely try to sit facing the ocean ♡

What three families ordered on the tablet at Gossi's

Before we came, I searched and looked over the menu ahead of time — there was so much I wanted to eat! We ordered spicy kalguksu, buckwheat makguksu, and buckwheat gimbap, then later added a buckwheat pancake too, haha.

Each table has a tablet, so ordering is simple. They also have all kinds of makgeolli (rice wine), including a buckwheat makgeolli that had me so curious — but since we had to drive, my husband and I both held off, haha.

How the makguksu, spicy soft-tofu kalguksu and buckwheat gimbap tasted

The dishes came out. When you think Gangneung, you think makguksu and sundubu (soft tofu), right? Being able to get both was so nice. My husband loves noodles and wanted something spicy, so the spicy sundubu kalguksu was perfect for him. I was craving something cool and refreshing, so the tangy makguksu was just right for me. And the buckwheat gimbap here is a specialty — you have to try it.

You can season the makguksu to taste with vinegar, mustard sauce, or sugar — they're set out at every table, which is convenient. The broth, made with a kelp and soy sauce base, is refreshing and addictive... I even drank soup I normally never touch.

I had a bite of the sundubu kalguksu too — the noodles were chewy and springy, and the spiciness makes it perfect for curing a hangover. Highly recommend for anyone who drank the night before. It's got savory sundubu in it too, so it's plenty filling as a full meal!

The gondre buckwheat pancake we added at Gossi's

Yep... everything was so good we couldn't resist ordering more. I'd never seen gondre (mountain thistle greens) buckwheat pancake before, so I was curious. It's a buckwheat pancake filled with meat and gondre greens.

Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, packed with filling, and light — it was so good! Even my husband, who doesn't usually like buckwheat pancake, tried it and said it was tasty. Since when?

Paying, waiting and the Gangwon souvenir corner

On our way out, I noticed the ocean-view seats were already full... man, so jealous, haha. You pay on the 1st floor, so bring your receipt down with you. Looking around, I saw a lot of celebrity signatures on the walls — of course, it really is a famous Gangneung restaurant. There's also a Gangwon-do souvenir corner near the entrance, worth checking out! We were lucky and had no wait when we went, but if there's a line, you can register through Catch Table.

Is Gossi's Donghae Makguksu worth a stop in Gangneung?

This is a great spot for a hearty breakfast or lunch in Gangneung. With the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the ocean, you can enjoy the open sea view while you eat, and it's a great pick if you want to try a range of Gangwon dishes all in one place! The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, and it's easy to bring a baby along too. If you're already at Gangmun Beach, I'd recommend stopping by.
