Tulip chicken feet with perilla wraps in Hongdae: Cheongnyeon 1987
In short
Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch is a pojangmacha-style chicken feet bar in Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station toward Yeonnam-dong. On this repeat visit the Cheongnyeon Dakbal Combo (39,000 won) came as tulip chicken feet at spice level 1 with added Chinese cellophane noodles, and the perilla leaf, mayonnaise, cellophane noodle and chicken feet wrap plus the kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) were the highlights. If you are sensitive to heat, pour in the bean sprout soup served alongside to tame the spice.

I visited with friends before, paying out of my own pocket, and the chicken feet combo was so generous and delicious that I had to come back! 🌶️🔥

I was looking for a bar in Hongdae/Yeonnam-dong and after going around in circles I ended up back at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 haha. It's on the walk from Hongik University Station toward Yeonnam-dong, so it's great for meeting up with someone for a drink (within 5 minutes of the station on foot). It opens fairly early compared to other bars, so it's perfect as a first stop for the night.

Indoor pojangmacha interior and outdoor street-side tables
Walk into Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch and — ta-da! — this pojangmacha (street tent bar) style interior welcomes you.

The weather was nice so I chose an outdoor table ♥ Isn't outdoor terrace seating just perfect in weather like this? I wore thin clothes and it was cool without being cold, which put me in such a good mood 🩵
What is on the menu at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987?

Fitting for a chicken feet place, there was a wide range of spicy dishes plus sides that pair well, like eomuktang (fish cake soup), rice balls, fried chicken skin, and mukjuk (acorn jelly soup). Soup chicken feet come in bone-in, boneless, or tulip options, and there's also grilled chicken feet, so you can pick based on your preference. There was even mala chicken feet not listed on the menu!
Cheongnyeon Dakbal Combo, 39,000 won: tulip chicken feet with Chinese cellophane noodles

The Cheongnyeon Dakbal Combo I had last time was so good I ordered it again! This whole spread comes out for 39,000 won,, I chose tulip chicken feet and added Chinese cellophane noodles! It comes with quail eggs, rice cake, and sausage as standard—!

Which spice level should you order? Tips if you cannot take heat
Being a proper chicken feet place, need I say more — the portion is huge and it's delicious.. Chicken feet spice goes up to level 3, and last time it was too spicy so I ordered level 1 this time, which was just right! Let it simmer for about 5 minutes before eating and it's amazing,,,
My tip for spice wimps: pour in the bean sprout soup that comes alongside to neutralize the heat!
Spice wimps, absolutely do not go for level 2-3,,,,, but spice masters will genuinely love this flavor.

The kalguksu at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987, second only to the chicken feet
The next best thing after the chicken feet was the kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) ㅜㅜ If they opened during the day, I'd want to come just for this one dish,,, the portion is genuinely huge, you eat and eat and it never ends 🤤

And of course these sides couldn't be anything but delicious haha. Isn't the portion really huge? Enough to burst even 4 people's stomachs.. Don't forget to dip the tuna mayo rice balls into the chicken feet broth. If it gets a bit too spicy, take a bite of a side like this, and you can just keep cycling through everything like a wheel!

The unbeatable wrap: perilla leaf, mayonnaise, cellophane noodles and chicken feet
And the perilla leaf + mayonnaise + cellophane noodles + chicken feet combo is truly unbeatable, I couldn't stop eating it... Also noting: dip the fried chicken skin in the chicken feet broth too.. There's some bean sprout soup cut off in the photo too, and now I want to go eat it again,,,

Go early if you want an outdoor table in Yeonnam-dong
On a day when you're craving spicy chicken feet in Hongdae 🌶️ if you're looking for a good spot to have dinner and drinks with friends, this is a solid Yeonnam-dong restaurant worth trying :) If you visit late in the evening there may be no seats left, so if you want to sit on the terrace, I'd recommend going early!! Next time I go, I plan to try other chicken feet menu items too 🤍
