Quiet late lunch and free parking at Kikukawa, a Magok eel restaurant

In short

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is an eel-specialty Japanese restaurant on the first floor of Building A, One Grove, on Gonghang-daero in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. Arriving well after the lunch rush, the writer ordered the Yondaime Kikukawa ilpum hitsumabushi (eel over rice) and a bokbunja (black raspberry) ade, and ate the eel three ways — plain, with scallion, wasabi and seaweed flakes, and as ochazeuke — in a near-empty dining room with wide tables and private rooms. With free parking of up to 5 hours depending on how much you spend, Kikukawa suits family gatherings and dates alike.

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is a great spot for special occasions or when you want a proper nourishing meal. I stopped by for hitsumabushi (eel rice bowl) while checking out One Grove. The location was a bit tricky to find, but following Naver's store description got me straight there. I'll keep it a secret that I walked past it once because I only saw the Chinese characters and thought it wasn't the place 🤫

The exterior already had that upscale Japanese restaurant vibe, which built up my expectations right from the entrance. The modern yet clean interior was striking. This is the main door, and pushing the side door makes it glide right open!

After being seated, I was first given a neatly set glass and cool water. The subtle scent lingering in the air made waiting for the food feel relaxing 😀

What the dining room feels like after the lunch rush

Taking a look around the inside of Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch 👀 The restaurant is huge. Since I visited well after the lunch rush, I got to photograph the spacious interior with no crowds.

Overall, the space was styled with warm lighting and clean wood-tone tables and seating. The seats were spaced generously, creating an atmosphere where you could focus comfortably on your meal, and on the right side of the photo you can see there was a private room too.

The galaxy-like lighting fixture on the ceiling and the softly glowing blinds added to the upscale Japanese restaurant mood. Modern touches and traditional Japanese sensibility blended together harmoniously! Thanks to the sophisticated space, I felt good even before the food arrived 😆

Yondaime Kikukawa ilpum hitsumabushi & bokbunja ade. This is what I ordered 😋

Wide wood-tone table set for two

The tables here are basically huge and wide, so two people can eat comfortably as if you rented the whole place. This photo was meant to show off just how vast the table is, hahahaha

On the table, a clean menu was arranged nicely along with sansho pepper and sauces to enjoy the eel rice bowl even more. The gold ornament(?) sitting on the tissue box especially caught my eye.

The bokbunja ade came out first 🍹 A gorgeous violet color topped with lemon and rosemary — just looking at it felt refreshing ✨️ I ordered it thinking the sweet-tart flavor would pair perfectly with the richness of the eel, and sure enough it did, haha.

How to eat the ilpum hitsumabushi three ways

Finally, the long-awaited hitsumabushi 🧡🤎 It arrived beautifully arranged. On the tray, the golden-grilled eel, savory broth, and side dishes were all set out neatly, and the moment the lid came off, the aroma that spread out was seriously appetite-stimulating. Ahh, let's dig in 😋😋

The staff explained how to enjoy the ilpum hitsumabushi properly! I read through it slowly again and followed along.

Instructions on how to eat hitsumabushi

The glossy sheen of the grilled eel was truly stunning to look at. It was grilled just right — crispy outside, moist inside — so the tenderness came through the moment I picked it up with chopsticks. The sweet-savory scent of the special tare sauce hit my nose,,

Hitsumabushi can be enjoyed several different ways, which makes eating it fun. First, I tasted the eel's plain flavor on its own,

second, I topped it with scallion, wasabi, and seaweed flakes for a sharp, tangy kick,

and finally, finished it off by pouring warm dashi broth over it to make ochazuke, ending with a clean, savory flavor that left me thoroughly satisfied.

This photo really captures the cleanness that's the strength of Japanese cuisine. I'm officially naming it best of the day, haha, so delicious,,🤍🤍
