Gangnam Korean BBQ with staff grilling: Ongijip Main Branch

In short

Ongijip Main Branch is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul. I reserved the 2–3 person, 500 g pre-grilled Set A for less waiting, then loved the flying-fish-roe cheese kimchi fried rice and kudzu naengmyeon. Verdict: a comfortable repeat pick for a smoke-free pork belly date.

Signature pork belly at Ongijip Main Branch
Pork belly at Ongijip in Apgujeong

Today I’m bringing you a story about a pork belly place in Apgujeong that I like enough to visit again and again!! There are already so many great restaurants and date-worthy spots around Apgujeong. I tend to prefer barbecue restaurants that have a nice atmosphere, are neat, and taste great—and Ongijip is exactly that... At pork belly places there’s usually a hood right in the middle, right? This place doesn’t have one, but there’s absolutely no smoke, so it feels comfortable and the atmosphere is so~~~ much betterㅠㅠ

Exterior of Ongijip in Apgujeong

It’s a 9-minute walk from Apgujeong Station and a 14-minute walk from Sinsa Station. Personally, I liked that it’s slightly outside the immediate Apgujeong Station area: quiet, yet still easy to get to.

Group seating and tables at Ongijip

Inside, there are everything from four-person tables to group seats. There really were lots of people having company dinners. I was surprised that every table was full even at 6 p.m. on a weekday, wow.

Reserve the pre-grilled set ahead of time

By the way, I recommend making a reservation through Naver in advance before visiting Ongijip!! It’s because of their signature pre-grilled set. If you select the pre-grilled set when booking ahead, they have it all pre-grilled and ready right on time... Wow, with it arriving already pre-grilled, there was so much less waiting—how could this be so goodㅠㅠ!

  • Pre-grilled Set A (2–3 people, 500 g) ₩57,000
  • Flying fish roe cheese kimchi fried rice ₩5,000

Pork neck, pork belly, and gabrisal

Ta-da, Pre-grilled Set A came out as soon as we ordered!! I was so glad we had reserved it~~ It includes 200 g of aged premium pork neck, 150 g of aged pork belly, 150 g of low-temperature-aged gabrisal (pork jowl), and Ongijip myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce)! Pork neck + pork belly + gabrisal~~

The staff grill the meat for you! The reason I like Ongijip is its onggi (earthenware) grill!! This onggi grill has that cauldron pork belly vibe, but it’s neat and upscale and neat! And maybe it keeps in the meat juices, because it lets you enjoy it properly—crispy outside and juicy inside..

Pork belly is best topped with kimchi and onion together, right~? Since the staff grilled it all for us, we really had a proper Apgujeong barbecue date! There’s no smoke here, so it’s a great place to visit when you want pork belly on a date.

The pork belly, pork neck, and gabrisal were delicious even plain without any sauce~~ And wrapped in lettuce, they were even better!!!

The flying fish roe cheese kimchi fried rice is essential

Ah everyone, this is seriously the most important thing. If you come to Ongijip, the flying fish roe cheese kimchi fried rice is a must!! Adding cheese is a must too!!!!! Wow, this place is a fried-rice gemㅠㅠㅠ The fried rice is so good that I want to go back just for this. I should have ordered two; I foolishly only ordered oneㅠ With the extra cheese, it had such a rich cheddar flavor—so good..

After the staff member left, my boyfriend turned it into a heart haha. Enjoying our date~~

A meal with great kudzu naengmyeon too

Ah, I thought only the fried rice would be good, but the kudzu naengmyeon is a must too... Why is this place also a naengmyeon gem? Haha. We were saying, “Ah, we have to come back to eat the meal dishes here,” haha.
