I'd heard the name forever since it's such a long-running tteokbokki spot in Yeouido, but this was my first time actually eating here properly. It's famous enough that anyone who loves tteokbokki has probably heard of it, and bunsik (Korean snack food) really does taste best when you order a bunch of things at once.

This time, instead of ordering things separately, I just got the Hyeonseoni Set.

I also came to understand why Hyeonseonine has been a well-known tteokbokki spot in Yeouido for so long. There are plenty of new-style tteokbokki places these days, but Hyeonseonine doesn't feel like it's chasing trends — it properly shows off the appeal of the familiar, delicious bunsik we all grew up with.

It seems like a place you'd think of in Yeouido when you want something simple but tasty for lunch or dinner, not anything fancy. Eating tteokbokki alone is fine solo, but if you're visiting with two or more people, I'd recommend ordering a combo menu like the Hyeonseoni Set that brings out several dishes together.

What I especially liked was that the varied menu makes it easy for a group to each pick what they like. Take a bite of tteokbokki, grab a piece of fried snack, chat for a bit, and suddenly the plates are empty. I went in thinking I'd eat something light and ended up feeling surprisingly full and satisfied.

It seems like the kind of place you'd especially crave on a day when you want something spicy. Rather than anything too special or unfamiliar, the appeal of Hyeonseonine is that you get to properly enjoy familiar bunsik flavors. Since the tteokbokki sauce is so generous, there's also the fun of dipping each item from the set into it one by one, and you end up eating the seasoning thoroughly right down to the end.
