Hi, this is Mandu! 😊 I was craving sushi and sashimi one evening, so I went to Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch (최우영스시야 종로점). Overall, thinking about the food composition and the price, the value for money was really good. In particular, the sushi with its thick fish and just-right rice is something I'll be thinking about again.

Menu prices and the 3,000-won corkage fee

The menu was quite varied — from basic assorted sushi to special sushi and premium sushi, plus kaisendon, sashimi, udon and more to choose from depending on your taste. And the corkage is only 3,000 won, which is very cheap. Given today's prices, the drinks here are on the affordable side too!

Warm soup served before the meal

Before the food arrived, they brought out a warm soup first. It was nice that all the basics you need for sushi and sashimi were well prepared.

The 19,000-won special sushi set: 15 pieces

That day we ordered the assorted sashimi (40,000 won) and the special sushi (19,000 won), along with soju (4,000 won).

Plate of 15-piece special sushi

We tried the special sushi first, and the lineup was so generous it was hard to believe it was only 19,000 won. It came with 15 pieces total, including flounder, tuna, eel, sea urchin (uni), monkfish liver (ankimo), sea bream, salmon, scallop, cuttlefish, and raw shrimp.

With so much variety, it was fun trying each one, and what I loved most was how thick the fish was piled on.

For sushi, I personally pay close attention to the amount of rice and how it's seasoned, and here the rice wasn't too much and was just the right amount, so I could really taste the fish. The rice seasoning wasn't too strong either, so it blended well with the toppings. Considering the price too, this was truly good-value Jongno sushi.

The 40,000-won assorted sashimi platter: 9 kinds of fish

The assorted sashimi at Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch also exceeded my expectations. About 9 different kinds of sashimi came out on one plate, including tuna, flounder, cuttlefish, scallop, and raw shrimp. Each ingredient had a slightly different texture and flavor, which made it great to pair with a glass of soju. For 40,000 won, the amount and lineup of sashimi were quite satisfying too.

The crab meat was appealing too, and the onion mayo sauce that came with the salmon wasn't too sweet — it paired well with the rich, fatty salmon.
