Seocho cake shop anniversary peach berry cut open at home: Chef Cho

In short

Chef Cho Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam is a fruit cream cake shop in Sweet Park, the B1 dessert hall of Shinsegae Department Store's Gangnam branch in Seocho, Seoul. Looking for an anniversary cake, the writer walked the whole of Sweet Park before choosing Chef Cho's Peach Berry, topped with peach and strawberry, then cut it at home to check the cross-section and found the cream not overly sweet, so the fruit came through clearly. For a fruit-loaded anniversary cake, Chef Cho is worth putting on the shortlist.

Sweet Park at Shinsegae Gangnam itself is packed with all kinds of dessert shops, so it was great for comparing cakes side by side lol. Riding the escalator down, the lighting was soft overall and the interior felt pretty upscale. The Chef Cho storefront, done in a gold-and-black design, stood out even among the neighboring shops haha. The cakes lined up in the display case had a look you just couldn't walk past lol.

Chef Cho's storefront: "Big Four" cake from Master of Living

In front of the Chef Cho storefront was a big sign reading 'Master's Cake Big Four,' referencing a Korean living-legend craftsmen TV segment. It also introduced Chef Jo Jeong-im as having run Chef Cho for 23 years haha. The store signage also listed her Korea Master Confectioner certification and various career highlights, which really gave off the sense of a place that has been making cakes professionally for a long time.

What especially caught my eye was the note that they use 100% dairy whipped cream and fresh fruit sourced daily haha. If you love fruit cream cakes, that kind of detail matters quite a bit lol.

Peach Berry, piled with peach and strawberry

This time at Chef Cho I chose the Peach Berry cake, topped with both peach and strawberry. Peach Berry seems to currently be one of the signature fruit cakes at Chef Cho Shinsegae Gangnam.

Chef Cho cake packaging box

Even in the packaging box it already looked pretty, but opening it up at home revealed the full visual haha. Strawberries circled the edge of the cake, and generously cut peach pieces were piled up like a mountain in the center lol.

The fruit caught my eye even before the cake itself did. The peach surface had a gentle sheen and the strawberry color contrasted vividly, so it photographed really well haha.

Looking at the cross-section, rows of strawberries ran through the whipped cream, so this wasn't just a cake with fruit piled on top. Underneath sat a soft sponge, with cream, strawberry, and peach layered together.

How Chef Cho's Peach Berry cream tastes: clean, not too sweet

Chef Cho's whipped cream leaned more toward light and smooth rather than overly sweet, so the fruit flavor really came through haha. Personally, when a fruit cake's cream is too sweet, I get sick of it after a few bites. Sure enough, other recent reviews of Peach Berry also mentioned that the cream isn't overly sweet.

The peach was soft with a juicy quality, and the strawberry's slight tartness came through here and there, making for a pretty good combination lol. Best of all, the amount of peach on top was substantial, so even cutting one slice meant getting plenty of fruit along with it.

It felt less like eating a cake and more like eating fruit and cream dessert together haha. Paired with a cup of coffee, it went down easily, slice after slice lol.

Is Chef Cho a good anniversary cake pick at Shinsegae Gangnam?

Chef Cho Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam left the strongest impression not for elaborate decoration but for whipped cream cakes generously loaded with fresh fruit. Peach Berry in particular, with the strawberry's red and the peach's soft color working well together, looked lovely for a birthday or anniversary cake haha. If you're looking for a cake at Shinsegae Gangnam Sweet Park and you love fruit, be sure to check out Chef Cho too.
