I searched around hard and ended up at a hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) place near Gwanghwamun, and my parents were so happy with it that I wanted to write up a detailed review!

Since this was a meal for my parents, I was careful about the ingredients and cooking methods — and it turned out the kitchen has no part-timers, only full-time chefs with at least 5 to 20 years of experience cooking everything themselves, and the overall quality really stood out! In particular, they don't use any store-bought premade products — everything from sauces to kimchi is made in-house. Maybe that's why it had a deep, clean flavor rather than a sharp, seasoning-heavy taste, which suited my parents' palate perfectly.

Which side dishes does Wongiok Gwanghwamun serve?

These are the basic side dishes at Wongiok Gwanghwamun! Japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), salad, chilled boiled pork, and other classic Korean dishes showed up as banchan. Everything was well-seasoned and, above all, delicious — great for whetting the appetite before the main dishes arrived.

Gyeoja-chae (mustard vegetable salad)

A closer look at the gyeoja-chae

This mustard vegetable salad isn't the usual salad you'd picture — it's Wongiok's own signature-style version! Underneath sits really tender hanwoo (Korean beef) tadaki, topped with various vegetables that add a crunchy texture when eaten together, so it's never bland. In particular, the tangy, zesty mustard-based sauce comes with a subtle drizzle of chili oil and cilantro on top, making it clean yet full of flavor.

Fried peppers (3 pieces)

A crazy visual — big, crispy-fried peppers!! They come with tongs and scissors so you can cut them up. The plump, crunchy cucumber peppers are packed tight with minced meat inside, and while fried food can sometimes feel greasy, the fresh, clean scent of the pepper cuts right through it, so I never got tired of it by the end 👍👍👍

Stir-fried octopus

The main dish, stir-fried octopus, hit the appetite right from the smoky char alone! The octopus wasn't overcooked at all, so there was no toughness or dryness — just a really nice chewy, springy texture in the mouth 👍 More than anything, instead of the harsh, heavy spiciness of store-bought sauce, the restaurant's own special sauce had a deep, sweet-spicy flavor with a subtle smoky char running all the way through, and my parents said the seasoning was clean too!

Boyang jeongol (nourishing hot pot)

The generous, neat presentation alone draws a gasp — Wongiok's signature dish, boyang jeongol! They say they only use 100% hanwoo two-plus grade cuts in the hot pot, and sure enough, the pot arrives packed with various hanwoo cuts, shiitake mushrooms, neungi mushrooms, and fresh vegetables, all neatly arranged. The broth is deep in flavor without being harsh or heavy, and it genuinely warmed me from the inside, haha. The meat was so tender it melted the moment it hit my mouth, so even elderly parents with sensitive teeth could eat it comfortably without any trouble!

Yeongyang sotbap (rice cooked in a stone pot)

The rice course, yeongyang sotbap, stands out for its fragrant rice and visible toppings. It's packed with healthy, nutritious toppings, so just eating the rice plain had a sweetness and nuttiness that filled the mouth more the more you chewed...! Scoop the warm rice into a bowl, mix it with the stir-fried octopus sauce, or spoon it into the tender hanwoo and broth from the boyang jeongol — either way, it's really delicious, haha.

They also serve crispy roasted gopchang-gim (seaweed) and a special sauce to wrap the rice in as you eat!! It's really good eaten together

Nurungji from the rice pot and sujeonggwa for dessert

Once all the rice is scooped out, they pour warm broth into the empty pot, and drinking that nurungji (scorched rice tea) after the meal made me feel even more full and satisfied! Haha. My parents were very pleased too☺️

The sujeonggwa served near the end of the meal has a spicy yet gently spreading cinnamon aroma with just the right sweetness, cleansing the palate! Thanks to it, the meal wrapped up feeling really clean and nice
