Daehak-ro sandwich takeout: egg bomb and jalapeño tender, Sallering

There are so many great places to eat in Daehak-ro, but when it actually comes to lunch or a simple meal, picking a menu is oddly hard.

Especially before going to see a play or a show, I crave something that's easy to eat but still fairly filling, not too heavy.

I had plans in Hyehwa this time, and ended up wanting a sandwich, so I stopped by Sallering Daehak-ro. I knew it as a place for salads and poke bowls, but there turned out to be quite a variety of sandwiches too, so I browsed the menu and picked a few things.

What I ordered to take out this time was:

It's in an easy-to-reach spot from Hyehwa Station, making it a good stop if you have plans in Daehak-ro or want to grab something before or after a play.

I especially liked that takeout was available. It's great when you don't have time to eat leisurely in the restaurant, or when you'd rather bring it home and eat comfortably.

Inside Sallering Daehak-ro: a clean, simple takeout counter

Walking in, the overall clean and fresh atmosphere was the first thing that caught my eye.

True to a place that mainly sells salads and poke bowls, there was a wide range of healthy-feeling menu items on offer, and solo diners seemed to fit right in naturally.

Given its location in Daehak-ro, it seemed like a spot popular with students, office workers, and people coming to see shows alike. Eating in the restaurant is nice, but it also felt like an easy, no-pressure place for takeout customers like me.

Sallering has quite a diverse menu beyond poke and salad — sandwiches, salad wraps, rice wraps, soups, drinks — so it seems like a place you could pick something different every time you visit.

On days you want to eat healthy, go for a poke bowl or salad; on days you want something a bit more convenient and filling, choose a sandwich — the menu range gives you plenty of options.

First sandwich: the egg bomb at Sallering Daehak-ro

The egg bomb sandwich sounded, from the name alone, like it would be loaded with egg! Opening it up, sure enough, the egg's presence was unmistakable.

Cut in half, the filling was packed in so tightly it looked filling just to look at it. Egg sandwiches can easily end up dry or bland, but here the bread and egg came together for a soft, easy bite.

With the egg's savory flavor front and center, it wasn't overpowering at all — the kind of sandwich anyone could eat comfortably. It would work well for a simple breakfast or a light lunch. I personally like egg sandwiches, so this was the one I reached for most comfortably out of the three.

Second sandwich: ham cheese egg

Next up was the ham cheese egg sandwich. With a name like that, you can already guess roughly what the flavor combo will be.

Ham, cheese, and egg — a combination that's hard to get wrong! The egg's soft flavor was joined by the ham's salty savoriness, with the cheese tying it together with its own richness in the middle — a different charm from the egg bomb.

Sandwiches sometimes end up with the filling sliding to one side, leaving nothing but bread by the last bite, but even after takeout, this one was packed generously enough that I could taste the filling in every bite.

With ham and cheese added, it definitely felt heartier than the egg sandwich! If you prefer ham- or cheese-heavy sandwiches over a plain egg one, this is probably the better fit. I personally felt this one suited lunch or a simple meal better than breakfast.

Third sandwich: jalapeño chicken tender

And the one I was most curious about this time was the jalapeño chicken tender sandwich.

With chicken tender inside plus jalapeño on top, this felt like the most filling and distinctive of the three. The chicken tender between the soft bread gave a hearty bite, and the jalapeño scattered throughout cut through any richness nicely.

Putting chicken in a sandwich usually brings a certain heaviness typical of meat, but with the jalapeño alongside, it turned out to be less heavy than expected. There's a slight spicy kick, so it should suit anyone who prefers bolder flavors over a plain sandwich.

Of the three, this one felt the most like an actual meal. If I had to pick just one for a day I wanted to eat heartily, I'd go with the jalapeño chicken tender sandwich. 🌶️🥪

All three side by side: which sandwich suits which taste?

The egg bomb sandwich centers on soft, savory egg, so it suits people who like plain, mild flavors.

The ham cheese egg sandwich blends ham, cheese, and egg for a familiar yet hearty taste. And the jalapeño chicken tender sandwich, with its chicken tender and jalapeño, was the most substantial and spiciest of the three.

Packing all three together made it easy for everyone to pick their own favorite. It would be fun to head to Daehak-ro with a friend and split different sandwiches between you.

Beyond sandwiches: poke bowls and salads at Sallering

This time I took out sandwiches, but looking at Sallering Daehak-ro's main menu, the range of poke bowls and salads was also quite extensive.

They sell poke bowls with a Korean-style bibim (mixed) twist, so you can enjoy them in a way that's a bit different from a typical salad. You can choose your base to taste, and with a variety of main toppings and dressings, the same poke bowl can taste different depending on the combination. It felt less like a one-and-done spot and more like somewhere I'd want to try a different combination next time.

It seems like a good place to visit on days when you want a salad but don't want something too light, or when you want a healthy meal. It also looked like a solid choice for anyone looking for a solo dining spot in Hyehwa or Daehak-ro. Nothing on the menu felt awkward to order alone, making it comfortable to stop by solo at lunchtime.

What made these sandwiches easy to eat as takeout

I ordered all three as takeout this time, and the packaging was tidy, making it easy to eat on the move or bring home. It'd work well either taking it home after a play or show in Daehak-ro, or grabbing something quick before one.

Sandwiches are naturally easy to eat one-handed, which is especially handy on busy days. They're good for office workers or students with a short lunch break who need to eat fast, and if you'd rather eat comfortably at home, takeout or delivery works too — I liked having the option depending on the situation.
