When you travel to Jeju, you end up at a cutlassfish stew restaurant at least once. This time, the local Seogwipo favorite Tamra Hansang was great because the braised cutlassfish set came with all kinds of sashimi too, haha.

This local favorite in Seogwipo sits right along Jeju Olle Trail Route 6, close to major sights like Cheonjiyeon Falls, Oedolgae Rock, Hwangwuji Coast, Jaguri Park, Seogwipo Marine Park, and Olle Market — a convenient stop for a meal while sightseeing.

Inside Tamra Hansang: reservations and baby chairs
The interior was very spacious and clean, with plenty of tables and seats. It looked like a place often used for family meals and gatherings of all kinds. Since it's a local favorite, I heard it's packed with customers during peak meal times, so I'd recommend booking ahead. We went on a weekday for a late lunch, so luckily we could eat comfortably.

They even had baby chairs and baby tableware ready. You can grab more side dishes from the self-serve bar, but the portions were so generous we barely had time to go get extras haha.

We had reserved ahead too and were shown to our set-up table.
The special thing about this local Seogwipo favorite is that you can eat all of Jeju's signature dishes in one set. The spread comes with an assortment of fresh seasonal sashimi and spot shrimp too. For travelers like us, being able to try cutlassfish stew and multiple kinds of sashimi in one sitting is just so appreciated — we want to taste everything the local food has to offer, haha.

The basic side dishes were the kind of clean, tidy choices that fit a proper meal, and every single one was delicious.

Fried cutlassfish and Jeju dombe pork on the set
Right after the basic side dishes were set out, the fried cutlassfish and Jeju dombe pork arrived. It was my first time trying fried cutlassfish, and it came out so freshly fried it was too hot to eat without blowing on it. The outside was crispy while the inside was so soft it melted in my mouth without needing to chew at all. The savory, distinctive flavor of the cutlassfish was outstanding — and of course, it was clearly fresh.

There was a tangy blueberry-and-strawberry sauce for dipping, and it paired so well with the fish that it made everything even tastier. It was so good we polished it off in no time, haha.

This is Jeju dombe pork (돔베고기), lightly seasoned and grilled like samgyeopsal (pork belly). You dip it in a tangy gochujang sauce or wasabi soy sauce. Since Jeju dombe pork uses fresh raw pork raised on Jeju, you don't even need to ask — it's just delicious.

Four seasonal sashimi: yellowtail, mackerel, cutlassfish and spot shrimp
Next came four kinds of seasonal sashimi: yellowtail, mackerel, cutlassfish, and spot shrimp. You could tell just by looking that they were fresh!!
We first dipped the yellowtail in vinegared gochujang and the mackerel in wasabi soy sauce. The fresh sashimi was wonderfully chewy, and the savory flavor grew stronger the more we chewed.
The cutlassfish sashimi shone silver haha. Since the owner sources the cutlassfish directly on the boat, there was zero fishy smell — it was extremely fresh. Eating it filled my mouth with a clean, refreshing flavor. The spot shrimp carried the crisp scent of seafood, giving a real sense of ocean freshness, with a satisfyingly springy texture.
We tried wrapping it in seaweed with tangy-seasoned onion and cheongyang chili on top. The savory aroma of the seaweed and the spicy chili blended with the sashimi's clean flavor, bringing out even more richness.

The main event: braised cutlassfish bubbling in its pot
The main dish, the cutlassfish stew, arrived. It looked so appetizing, bubbling away in a thick stone pot. The cutlassfish was quite large and thick too.
The bubbling seasoning had soaked deeply into the fish, and the savory flavor was fantastic.

The spicy, sharp seasoning had sunk deep into the cutlassfish flesh — it was the kind of thing that makes you eat way more rice than usual.
The soft, moist cutlassfish flesh melted apart in my mouth, with a spicy flavor layered on top.

The sharp broth, with the sweetness of the radish added in, had a deep, rich flavor. I think I actually ate more of the radish once the rice-scorched tea came out.

Picking apart the sweet-and-spicy cutlassfish flesh, a bowl of rice disappeared in no time. The fluffy, tender flesh made it obvious it was fresh, Jeju-caught fish.

Finishing with stone pot rice and nurungji tea
The stone pot rice, topped with potato and ginkgo nuts, was freshly cooked, glossy, and gave off a gentle, savory aroma.
The warm rice-scorched tea (sungnyung) cleanly cleared away any lingering food smell. The savory, warm sungnyung comforted my stomach as I wrapped up a delicious cutlassfish stew set at this local Seogwipo favorite, Tamra Hansang. I'd love to stop by again the next time I travel to Jeju.
