Mild 0.5 spice malatang and mini guobaorou in Suwon: Rahongbang

In short

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is a malatang (Chinese spicy hot pot noodle soup) restaurant on Manseok-ro 5beon-gil in Cheoncheon-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon. On a Friday evening the writer came with her husband and child and ordered two bowls of malatang, one at the mild 0.5 spice level and one at level 1, plus a mini guobaorou (sweet and sour crispy pork), filling the bowls with ingredients priced by weight. Beef, lamb and skewers cost nothing extra at Rahongbang, and the rich broth made with zhima jiang (sesame paste) went well with the freshly fried guobaorou.

It's finally Friday, the end of the week, so I went to Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch for a delicious dinner of malatang and guobaorou.

Having dinner with my husband and kid — spicy, delicious malatang and sweet, chewy guobaorou — left us full and satisfied, and we got to eat a nice variety of ingredients.

What is Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch like? Near Lotte Mart in Cheoncheon-dong

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is a malatang restaurant located at 6 Manseok-ro 5beon-gil, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. Suwon's Cheoncheon-dong is a fairly lively area in the northern part of Suwon — it's close to the Cheoncheon-dong Lotte Mart and Dongnam Health University, so a lot of students and Jangan-gu locals come here. So this is a place where students and nearby residents come often for malatang!

The store at this Suwon malatang restaurant everyone loves — the shop itself was fairly quiet, so it was nice to eat, but delivery orders kept coming in and the staff looked really busy. It's a great spot for a family meal out, but it also seems to be a popular delivery restaurant for malatang in Cheoncheon-dong :)

The menu at Rahongbang in Cheoncheon-dong!

There were way more side dishes than I expected — egg fried rice, guobaorou, shrimp egg fried rice, yutiao (fried dough sticks), and more. Since my family loves guobaorou, we ordered a mini guobaorou and two bowls of malatang :)

Thinking about it now, it might have been nice to order just one malatang and mix in more sides like guobaorou and lemon cream shrimp. The malatang was really good, but seeing the menu again makes me want to eat all the sides too, haha!

Which spice level works with a child? Mild 0.5 versus level 1

At Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch, you put your ingredients in a basket, pay by weight, and just tell them your spice level. For the bowl I'd share with my kid, I went with level 0.5 mild, and ordered the other bowl at level 1, which is slightly spicy.

Even with beef, lamb, and skewers, there's no extra charge since everything is calculated by weight, so picking ingredients was much more relaxed than at other places. You just need to meet the ₩8,000 minimum order, so feel free to pick freely!

Takeout is available starting from ₩10,000, just so you know^^

I'm not sure exactly how it's cooked, but Rahongbang's malatang seems to come out about 5 minutes after ordering! The malatang was ordered and cooked in a flash.

Basin-sized bowls of malatang and the rich zhima jiang broth

The bowl I picked was meant to share with my kid, so it was double the amount — apparently the bowls differ by portion size, because mine was way bigger, basin-sized, compared to my husband's.

Behold the malatang from this Suwon restaurant everyone loves~~~ We packed in so many ingredients, haha, it looked super hearty and generous. Corn rice cake, sweet potato rice cake, cheese rice cake, corn noodles, beef, various fenzi (glass noodles), quail eggs, all sorts of vegetables — we really picked a ton of things~~~~

Malatang ingredients lifted out of the broth

Wow, really~~~ Made so generously, it was incredibly delicious, this Cheoncheon-dong malatang. Since there's no extra charge for meat, I could pick without worrying too much about the price, which was really nice.

You can also add extra zhima jiang — compared to other places, the paste here seemed thicker, and it was so nutty and delicious :) I think the reason the malatang here is so good is thanks to that broth flavor!!

How was the mini guobaorou at Rahongbang?

The guobaorou we ordered together came out while we were in the middle of eating the malatang — freshly fried, super hot and crispy but also very chewy, it paired really well with the malatang. The meat inside the crispy batter was so good, and the sweet and sour guobaorou sauce was delicious.

Freshly fried mini guobaorou

Chewy guobaorou eaten together with spicy malatang~~~ Truly an essential order :) A hearty Friday night dinner with malatang from this Cheoncheon-dong favorite~!

A Cheoncheon-dong favorite where I enjoyed everything from picking ingredients to the meal itself. I'd recommend it as a place to eat near the Cheoncheon-dong Lotte Mart, and it's also close to Jeongja-dong, so if you live nearby, give it a try^^
