Korean restaurant in Changwon, window-view hall, ssambap for 3: Masan

In short

Masan Ssamjangjip is a Korean restaurant with 30 side dishes on Haeandae-ro in Masan, Changwon, set in a former sushi restaurant now opened up into a bright window-view hall instead of separate rooms. Ordering ssambap (wrapped rice with meat) for 3 brought snail ssamjang to wrap around stir-fried pork, plus a crab and sea squirt doenjang stew and braised kimchi, with an unlimited self-serve snack bar and Han River ramyeon to pass the wait. It's a generous, homestyle spread worth the trip to Masan's Daetgeori area.

Masan's Korean restaurant favorite: Masan Ssamjangjip

I heard there's a Korean restaurant on Masan's coastal road at Daetgeori that piles on a table with a whopping 30 side dishes, so I went to check it out myself :)

The atmosphere at Masan Ssamjangjip

Right from the entrance, you get that calm, tidy feel unique to Korean restaurants.

Traditional charm plus a clean atmosphere — the moment you walk in, it smells like a great Korean set-menu restaurant 〰️

Tidy, well-kept interior of Masan Ssamjangjip

This used to be a sushi restaurant I visited occasionally, and now it's been reborn as a Korean restaurant, so I came back to check it out. The space felt familiar, but what used to be divided into separate rooms has been opened up into a wide, airy hall, making the meal feel much more relaxed.

There are also seats by the floor-to-ceiling windows where you can enjoy a wide-open city view while eating at ease — great for the atmosphere too. They also have private rooms for a more intimate meal, but they happened to be occupied by other guests, so unfortunately I couldn't photograph the interior. If you want a quiet, comfortable meal, the rooms would be a good option.

The unlimited self-serve bar and Han River ramyeon

Masan Ssamjangjip even has an unlimited self-serve bar — rice cakes, fruit, nostalgic snacks like jjondeugi (chewy taffy) and chocolate, sausage, ppeongtwigi (puffed rice snack), all piled high! Since the food takes a bit of time to come out, these snacks are great for passing the wait 🙂

On top of that, you can also enjoy unlimited Han River ramyeon! You get to pick a ramyeon that suits your taste and cook it yourself, which made it even better — a restaurant that packs in the fun along with the food.

The 30 side dishes came out one by one — from mouthwatering, tidy little side dishes to hearty mains, the sheer volume was no joke·· It felt as generous and heartfelt as home cooking, the kind of meal that reminds you of grandma's table.

Side dishes including stir-fried pork, japchae and tteokgalbi

Stir-fried pork, crispy pancakes, acorn jelly, tofu with kimchi, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), tteokgalbi (short rib patties), sausage, and steamed dishes all filled the table, plus lotus root, braised mushrooms, braised quail eggs, braised radish, various namul (seasoned vegetables), braised kimchi, and finally a savory doenjang stew! Every side dish was different, which made picking and choosing part of the fun.

This place's cheat code: snail ssamjang

This place's cheat code is the snail ssamjang! I put a piece of stir-fried pork on a fresh wrap vegetable, added a generous dollop of the snail-infused ssamjang, and took a big bite.

The crispy pan-fried pancake, eaten hot, was nutty and crunchy — it disappeared in an instant as soon as it hit the table 😋 The mild tofu topped with kimchi had a savory depth that really brought out the flavor.

Country-table style namul and braised side dishes

With that country-table feel from so many generous side dishes, and every one of them clean and mild instead of overly seasoned, my chopsticks kept going back without any guilt.

Doenjang stew with crab and sea squirt

Crab and sea squirt doenjang stew, and braised kimchi

I love crab and sea squirt, and this doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) was loaded with both, plus tofu, which made it even better!! The broth, drawn out from the seafood, was refreshing and savory without being salty, with a deep umami that had me scooping up spoonful after spoonful of rice with the broth.

Bowl of well-braised kimchi

The braised kimchi was spicy and tangy in just the right way to wake up your appetite, and the soft, well-cooked kimchi paired with a spoonful of rice made it hard to stop — a total rice thief 🤤 I ate so many side dishes I ended up too full and had to pass on the Han River ramyeon 😂 Next visit, I'll definitely have to try the Han River ramyeon too!
