Seocho lamb skewer dinner with soju and eggplant: Hanseong Yang Kkochi

In short

Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2 is a lamb skewer restaurant on Seochodae-ro 50-gil in Seocho, Seoul, right by Gyodae Station. Weekday tables are hard to book because of office dinners, so the writer went on a weekend and ordered lamb skewers at 17,000 won, lamb loin skewers at 23,000 won and eohyangga ji (Sichuan-style eggplant) at 18,000 won, finishing with 3 bottles of soju. The eohyangga ji tastes like a mild, non-spicy ganpunggi and comes in a generous portion, making it the must-order dish at Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2.

I went to Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2, a famous lamb skewer restaurant near Gyodae Station that's apparently even harder to book on weekdays than weekends. It's so popular for office worker dinners on weekdays that we actually had it easy going on a weekend.

What we ordered and what it cost

📍 Our order at Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2 📍 Eohyangga jia ₩18,000 Yang kkochi ₩17,000 Lamb loin skewers ₩23,000 Soju ₩6,000

We originally planned to order just the two skewer types, but since we heard they're known for their eohyangga jia, we added that too — and ended up finishing 3 bottles of soju haha.

Notice posted in the restaurant about the benefits of lamb

I read through the whole write-up about the health benefits of lamb. Anyway, the gist is that it's good for you haha. This is also the lamb skewer spot that appeared on SBS Live Today!!

Restaurant notice describing the benefits of zira (cumin)

The cumin (zira) notice posted on the restaurant wall

⭐️ Benefits of zira (cumin) ⭐️ Zira has a warming nature. It improves blood circulation, especially coldness in the body, and is effective at removing bad breath. It helps you sleep well, strengthens the stomach, and is excellent for digestion. It's also used as a remedy for lower back pain, menstrual cramps, a cold lower abdomen, and strengthening the intestines.

  • Lamb - zero cholesterol, good for digestion and dieting
  • Zira (cumin) - helps with a cold lower abdomen, coldness, menstrual cramps, intestinal strength

Zira seems like it's especially good for women? And since I already love zira anyway — jackpot!!

Basic side dishes: roasted peanuts, jjachai, and pickled onion

Side dishes and the lamb skewer dipping sauces

The basic side dishes at this Gyodae Station favorite, Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2, are roasted peanuts, jjachai (pickled mustard root), and pickled onion.

Zira was set out in a container at each table, and you mix in as much as you like with the lamb skewer sauce. Soy sauce and cheongyang chili peppers are brought over separately by the staff — so shout 'lots of cheongyang chili peppers!!' haha.

Why eohyangga ji (Sichuan-style eggplant) is the must-order dish

You absolutely, definitely have to order the eohyangga jia (₩18,000) at Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2. This was the first lamb skewer restaurant where I found eohyangga jia this delicious. The portion is genuinely huge, so even ordering it as a side dish fills you up.

The food's out, so cheers ❤️

The portion of eohyangga jia was massive, and the taste is basically like a non-spicy ganpungi. You get spicy, tangy, and sweet all at once. It's super crispy, and the eggplant inside is seriously delicious. Even if you hate eggplant, once you fall for the eohyangga jia, it'll become a must-order.

Lamb loin skewers on the grill

Lamb loin skewers vs regular lamb skewers, and the grilling order

At Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2, they grilled the lamb loin skewers first. Since it's a leaner cut, it goes on the grill first haha. It was fairly thick, so it took a while to cook.

Golden-brown grilled lamb loin skewers
Lamb skewer with cheongyang chili on soy sauce dip

You have to dip it deep in the soy sauce, pile on cheongyang chili, and dunk it like crazy in the lamb skewer sauce mixed with plenty of zira — that's the key to how good it tastes!! Since it's loin and low in fat, even after a lot of grilling it stayed just as big as its original size. There was no gamey lamb smell at all, so it's a flavor anyone could enjoy!!

Regular lamb skewers shrunk after fat rendered out on the grill

The regular yang kkochi, on the other hand, has more fat, so as it grilled, the fat rendered out and it shrank right down haha. This one's best eaten right as it comes off the grill, so we grilled them one at a time just before eating haha.

Full house even on a weekend: is Hanseong Yang Kkochi worth it?

I went to Hanseong Yang Kkochi Gyodae Branch 2, a famous lamb skewer restaurant near Gyodae Station. Sure enough, it was packed even on a weekend, which makes me wonder just how busy it must get on weekdays. That's a wrap on this review :))
