Thin-batter tangsuyuk at Iksan Chinese restaurant Hwangbihong

In short

Hwangbihong is a Chinese restaurant on Busong-ro 6-gil in Busong-dong, Iksan. The order was gochu-jjajang (spicy black bean noodles) and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), pairing spicy noodles with big pieces of pork in a thin, crisp batter, plus a self-serve side dish bar and roadside parking nearby. Hwangbihong opens 11:00-20:00 daily and is a memorable pick for jjajangmyeon and tangsuyuk in Iksan.

Where is Hwangbihong in Busong-dong, Iksan, and where do you park?

I visited Hwangbihong, a jjamppong spot in Busong-dong, Iksan. There wasn't a dedicated parking lot, but there were plenty of roadside spots nearby, so parking wasn't difficult.

It's a Chinese restaurant tucked away in a spot that felt more out of the way than I expected, yet customers kept streaming in. That got me even more excited haha

When I walked in, there were a lot of workers there eating a meal. You know a spot workers themselves choose to eat at is a true hidden gem, right? Hwangbihong makes handmade dough with chives every morning. They also simmer Korean beef ox bones in a cauldron for 24 hours as the base for the jjamppong.

Here's the menu at Hwangbihong, an Iksan jjamppong spot — jjamppong, jjajang, gochu-jjajang, tangsuyuk, and many more options.

Side dishes at Hwangbihong are self-serve. Just take as much as you'd like! But only take what you'll actually eat!!

We ordered tangsuyuk and gochu-jjajang. I went back and forth between jjamppong and jjajangmyeon, but since so many people around us were eating jjajangmyeon, I went with that.

How does the gochu-jjajang taste at Hwangbihong?

Instead of regular jjajangmyeon, I ordered the gochu-jjajang, so the sauce was loaded with chili. Can you see how glossy it looks? That glossiness matched a really deep umami flavor when I ate it.

A flavor I want to eat again, ugh. It was the most memorable jjajangmyeon I've had in a while. Maybe because the noodles are handmade with chives every morning, they were chewy and soaked up the sauce perfectly — so good.

Why the thin-batter tangsuyuk is worth ordering

If you come to Hwangbihong, just order the tangsuyuk. No question about it. The meat here is big but the batter is thin, giving it the best bite. That's also why it doesn't feel greasy at all. Crispy and satisfying to chew.

Maybe that's why it paired so perfectly with the jjajangmyeon we ordered alongside it. The combo of slightly spicy jjajangmyeon and crispy tangsuyuk — I really hope you all try it too. If you're looking for a jjajangmyeon spot or a tangsuyuk spot in Iksan, I highly recommend Hwangbihong. I heard their jjamppong is amazing too, so I want to come back and try that next time.
