Gangneung beachfront makguksu with boiled pork for two: Samgyori

In short

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is a Korean restaurant right in front of Namhangjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, where you eat dongchimi makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in radish water kimchi broth) with a sea view. Two people ordered two bowls of dongchimi makguksu (22,000 won) and a small suyuk platter (29,000 won), first eating the noodles in the cold dongchimi broth and then adding seasoning sauce and perilla oil to turn them into a mixed version, while the Korean pork belly suyuk was tender with no gamy smell. With a sunset walk on Namhangjin Beach right outside the door, Samgyori Namhangjin makes a fine last meal of a Gangneung trip.

Whenever I travel to Gangneung, my last meal is always here...!!! It's Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch, where you can eat makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) while looking at the ocean~ The makguksu and sujuk (boiled pork) here are seriously incredible... I stop by every single time I'm in Gangneung. This is a place I genuinely love ෆ Here's my review of Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch, a must-try dongchimi makguksu spot in Gangneung.

  • Parking available in front of the restaurant

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch sits right in front of Gangneung's Namhangjin Beach. There's a huge parking area right out front too, so parking was totally stress-free. Parking here is seriously convenient..

Wide parking area in front of the restaurant
Traces of celebrity visits displayed at the entrance
Black rice nurungji chips and Gangneung coffee gunbbang displayed at the entrance

The moment I walked in, what caught my eye were all the traces of the many celebrities who've visited.. apparently a lot of them come back more than once. A true Gangneung local favorite 👏🏻 Near the entrance they also sell snacks like black rice nurungji chips and Gangneung coffee gunbbang (dried bread), plus bead-shaped ice cream~ A great place to bring kids too!

Inside: a clean, modern dining room by the sea

Stylish, clean seating inside the restaurant

View of the remodeled restaurant interior

The interior was really stylish and clean. Pretty paintings are displayed on the walls, and they go really well with the tables and chairs. Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch first opened in 1998 and was remodeled in 2023. Maybe that's why it looks so tidy and fresh ✨

Sit down and this is the view you get of Namhangjin Beach~ so good. One of the few places in Gangneung where you can enjoy makguksu while looking at the sea..!

On one side of the restaurant, there were baby chairs, aprons, and even a coffee machine set up.

Menu and what comes with the table setting

Napkins, utensils, and sauces for the makguksu set on the table

Each table has a tablet, so ordering was easy. On the side there were napkins, paper cups, utensils, and the various sauces for the makguksu. We ordered two makguksu and a small sujuk. When my boyfriend and I come here, we order this exact combo without even discussing it haha.

  • ✔️Sujuk (small) ₩29,000

Ugh, looks so good.. 🤤

Radish and yeolmu kimchi served with the makguksu
Lettuce and baek-kimchi served with the sujuk

Radish and yeolmu kimchi (young radish greens kimchi) come as side dishes with the makguksu, while lettuce and baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi) come with the sujuk~ The side dishes here are seriously delicious.. especially the yeolmu kimchi and baek-kimchi. They apparently make all the side dishes in-house, and you can really taste the skill in it!!

Instructions for how to enjoy the makguksu

Broth or mixed? Building your own makguksu at the table

On one side there's a guide for how to enjoy the makguksu best. Unlike most makguksu restaurants, this place doesn't separate the menu into 'brothy' and 'mixed' — instead you build your own combination however you like. Since you can make it exactly to your own taste, this is a great system.

Dongchimi makguksu with thin ice floating in the broth

Dongchimi makguksu. Thin ice floating on top~ this is what dongchimi is all about.. they make the dongchimi themselves too, apparently. My style is to pour in 2–3 ladles of the dongchimi broth and eat it brothy for a while, then add seasoning sauce partway through and switch to mixed style. That way you get to enjoy both brothy and mixed makguksu 🐷

So I eat it brothy first with yeolmu kimchi on top, then move a little noodle onto a plate, add seasoning sauce and perilla oil, and eat it mixed-style! Both ways are so good ㅠㅠ

Small han-don pork belly sujuk boiled fresh that day
A piece of sujuk wrapped in baek-kimchi

Korean pork belly suyuk, small platter

Sujuk (small). Han-don (Korean pork) belly boiled fresh that day! Please, please order the sujuk when you get makguksu here~ the sujuk is just as insane as the noodles. Any gamy smell? Zero. It's soft, moist, with a light meaty aroma.. wrap it in the radish kimchi and baek-kimchi that come with it and it's game over. I can never forget this taste, so I stop by every time I'm in Gangneung! The makguksu + sujuk combo is love 🫶🏻

A sunset walk on Namhangjin Beach after lunch

Sunset scenery at Namhangjin Beach

After eating our fill of makguksu and sujuk, we walked along Namhangjin Beach right out front 🌊 The sun was starting to set and the sky was so pretty ⋆⭒˚。⋆⭑ Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is the perfect spot for a meal followed by a beach walk — I really, truly recommend it .ᐟ.ᐟ.ᐟ It's also close to Gangneung's Anmok Café Street, so it works well as a café-then-dinner route too. If you're heading to Gangneung, this is a real must!! Make sure to stop by Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch :)
