Dongtan Station pho with Hanoi beer and hoisin onion side: Mibundang

Some days near Dongtan Station you just want something light with hot broth and noodles, you know? This time I was passing through the area when the clean wooden exterior of Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch caught my eye. I already like pho in general, but what really drew me in here was the layout — it looked perfect for a quiet solo meal. Looking at the menu, besides the pho varieties there were also side dishes like sweet potato cha gio (Vietnamese spring rolls), scallop cha gio, potato-wrapped shrimp, wedding siu mai, buffalo wings, and an assorted fried platter. You could easily eat just pho on its own, or add a side for a heartier meal.

You order at the kiosk set up near the entrance. It wasn't complicated at all — you just choose dine-in, fully-cooked takeout, or half-cooked takeout on the screen, then pick your menu items. Takeout is available too, so if you'd rather eat comfortably at home, that's an option.

Near the entrance there was cool hutgae (Japanese raisin tree) tea and parasols set out for waiting guests. It was pretty sunny the day I visited, and even a short wait felt easier with this small touch prepared. Maybe that's why every seat was full right from opening time.

Once inside Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch, the first thing you notice is the long wooden bar table. Seats run along one wall, with the kitchen on the opposite side.

The seats aren't spaced particularly wide apart, but you could tell they were designed with solo diners in mind.

Under the island-style table in front of each chair there were utensils and tissues ready to go,

and on the shelf above there were sauces within easy reach, along with a little hook for hanging your mask. A small detail, but genuinely convenient.

The interior is unified in wood tones. The ceiling, tables, and even the lighting all give off a warm feeling, and there were coat hooks on the wall for bags or jackets.

There was even a sign asking guests to keep their conversation quiet so it doesn't carry to the next seat. And honestly, the whole meal did feel calm and low-key — a good match for days when you want a quiet meal rather than a bustling restaurant.

What I ordered that day was brisket pho and the assorted fried appetizer plate.

The pho came piled generously with meat, bean sprouts, scallions, and chili, and the broth was on the clear side, which made a clean first impression. Cilantro is given if you ask for it.

Hoisin and sriracha mixed into the onion, eaten like kimchi

About halfway through, I turned the onion into a kind of kimchi by mixing in hoisin sauce and sriracha. If you add the sauces straight into the broth, it gets cloudy and it's harder to taste the pho itself, so I like mixing sauce into the onion and piling it on top instead.

The crunchy texture of the onion plus the spicy, salty sauce gave a totally different flavor from the plain broth I'd been having. Eating like this, I added a little cilantro at the very end too. Its distinct aroma made the broth taste even cleaner, and I ended up finishing the last drop of broth happily.

The side dish I ordered alongside the pho also came out generously piled on one plate. The assorted fried appetizer plate had sweet potato and scallop cha gio, potato-wrapped shrimp, and buffalo wings — all different in color, shape, and flavor, all on one plate. Each piece looked different, so it was fun picking through one by one, and fun just to look at with so many items to try at once.

Since everything was fried nice and crispy, it went really well with a cold Hanoi beer on the side.
