Gankeun Galbi Seongseo Branch is an all-you-can-eat pork rib and pork belly restaurant in Igok-dong, Dalseo, Daegu. Two diners visited at 3:30pm on a weekday, ordered the pork ribs plus pork belly (Korean-raised) set for two, and worked through the self-bar of pork cutlet, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and chicken gizzards before finishing with milk snow bingsu (shaved ice). Between the full window wall, the kids' playroom and parking right under the building, Gankeun Galbi suits families and couples alike.

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a fusion Korean rice bowl and bibimbap restaurant near Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station and Kim Kwang-seok Street in Jung-gu, Daegu. On a late weekend lunch with family, the order was mackerel gondre rice (samchi gondrebap), eggplant doenjang rice bowl and pollock mulhoe yukhoe, and the mild mackerel gondre rice served with gopchang gim (thin crisp seaweed sheets) to wrap was a big hit with the child. Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is worth recommending for families after an easy, gentle meal out.

The noodles pressed fresh each morning and the spicy kimchi at Donggok Jemyeon are worth a return visit.

The order was special ogyeopsal (extra-thick five-layer pork belly) and jjondeuksal (chewy cut), eaten with barley doenjang and herring roe, plus the garlic sauce the staff set on the grill with the first round of meat to cut the richness. With a roomy annex beyond the main building and a doenjang jjigae full of tofu to finish, Matdongsam Beomeo made for a satisfying meal.

On a late weekend lunch, a family of three ordered the Dongi grilled pork bulgogi bansang, the spicy grilled jeyuk set meal and a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and fried their own eggs at the self-bar. The smoky pork bulgogi and the spicy grilled jeyuk made a good pair at Cafe Dongi, but the small tangsuyuk was the dish the family remembered most.

Beef bone kalguksu before closing in Jung-gu, Daegu: Donggok Jemyeon

Donggok Jemyeon (동곡제면) is a kalguksu (Korean knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant that makes its own noodles, on Gukchebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, near the Gongpyeong intersection by Jungangno Station and 228 Memorial Park. Arriving as the last customers late in the evening, we ordered hanwoo beef bone kalguksu, chogye bibim kalguksu (cold tangy mixed noodles) and a half plate of gabrisal pork suyuk (boiled pork); the bone broth was rich and savory and the noodles had real bounce. With free extra bowls of rice, Donggok Jemyeon makes a filling dinner on a cool evening.
