Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Korean restaurant in Gangneung, Gangwon, run under the name of the 15th-generation certified tofu master. Visiting with a baby, the writer ordered the Chodang tofu table (sundubu jjigae + tofu samhap) and found a baby chair and baby utensils ready at the table, with a mild white broth that was clean-tasting and full of umami. A satisfying Gangneung sundubu spot for families with babies and for adults alike.

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant right across from Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon. On a family trip, three dishes were shared: a soy-based water makguksu (10,000 won), a bibim makguksu (12,000 won) and a medium kkamak-jang boiled pork platter kept warm on a tabletop brazier (28,000 won). The mild soy broth was easy to share with a child, and the brazier-warmed pork rounded out a satisfying, well-balanced meal.

On a Tuesday when getting into the Sokcho Central Market parking lot alone took 30 minutes, this writer left with two bags of the 3-color grain gangjeong 8-piece set, ₩10,000 each, and noted the 12-piece set at ₩15,000. As a market snack to carry home, Ibuja Mayak Gotgan's grain gangjeong beat packing more chicken gangjeong or squid sundae.

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a Korean restaurant in the Haksapyeong sundubu (soft tofu) village in Sokcho, where the same family has made tofu for three generations. Near Seorak Sorano, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu served jjamppong seafood sundubu and bulgogi baekban with a banchan spread to rival a full Korean set-meal restaurant, plus complimentary acorn jelly. Nothing was heavily seasoned, so Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is an easy choice for a meal with parents.

Hoega is a sashimi takeout restaurant in a residential stretch of Gyodong, Sokcho. A mixed sashimi platter (small) plus one serving of mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) came to 60,000 won ordered ahead by phone, and the package included ssam lettuce wraps, chojang (sweet chili sauce), aged kimchi, sushi rice and packaged seaweed sheets, so nothing extra had to be bought near the accommodation. With thick-cut slices and abalone on the mulhoe, Hoega made a satisfying room dinner for a family of four.

Makguksu lunch with kids in Gangneung: Samgyori Dongchimi Namhangjin

Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu Namhangjin branch is a dongchimi makguksu (chilled buckwheat noodles in radish water kimchi broth) restaurant directly in front of Namhangjin Beach in Gangneung. A family lunch there came to dongchimi makguksu at 11,000 won, pollack sashimi makguksu at 13,000 won and a small domestic boiled pork platter at 29,000 won, and toddlers under 48 months get a baby makguksu free. The dining room is large with baby chairs and turnover is quick, so Samgyori Dongchimi Makguksu is an easy lunch with children if you arrive before noon.

Price tags marked by 1kg and 500g sit on every tub, so squid jeotgal at 12,000 won for 500g and octopus jeotgal at around 15,000 won could be picked without asking, and the shop sealed each container in plastic wrap so it travelled odour-free to a sibling's home and emptied a full bowl of rice. Hwangbuja Jeotgal suits anyone who wants to compare prices before buying.

Sokcho Seoraksan café, mist clearing over Ulsanbawi: Cafe Neorae

Cafe Neorae is a café on Wonam Haksapyeong-gil in the sundubu (soft tofu) village of Sokcho, Gangwon, with floor-to-ceiling Ulsanbawi rock views on its second and third floors. The visit fell on a cloudy day, so Seoraksan stayed hidden behind clouds until the mist lifted on the way back out, and the order was a Neorae Latte at 7,500 won, an Americano at 6,000 won and an Earl Grey lemon tart at 8,000 won. The Neorae Latte, topped with soybean pulp, tasted nutty rather than heavy, and Cafe Neorae looks good in clear and overcast weather alike.

Sokcho bakery haul frozen and air-fryer reheated: Doris Patisserie

Doris Patisserie is a takeout-only bakery in a hot-pink building right in front of the entrance to Sokcho Central Market in Gangwon. A box of croho (egg tarts), 3 kinds of financiers and 3 kinds of madeleines were reserved by text the day before and collected at the 12:00 pickup slot, and the leftovers kept their crisp-outside, moist-inside texture after being frozen and briefly reheated in an air fryer. If you want egg tarts at Sokcho Central Market, texting Doris Patisserie in advance is the answer.
