Gyeongsan set meal of spicy baby octopus, 4-hour parking: Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the second floor of the main concert hall at Yeungnam University's Cheonma Art Center in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. Over a weekend lunch alone, the writer ordered the Grandmother's Stir-Fried Baby Octopus set meal, went back to the self-service bar for half a bowl more rice, and fried an egg to go with it. With 4 hours of parking covered, Cafe Dongi works well as a solo meal before a campus walk or a laptop session at the first-floor cafe.

Friday lunch sushi set with cold soba in Gyeongsan: Sonsi Sushi

Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch is an aged-sushi Japanese restaurant on the university street facing the front gate of Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. On a Friday lunch visit for two, the value set (for 2–3 people) came to 38,700 won after upgrading to 12 pieces of sushi and swapping in Namhae anchovy cold soba, and it covered aged nigiri, a sashimi rice bowl and fried shrimp. The cold soba was only okay, but as one set that lets two people taste several dishes, Sonsi Sushi was a filling, satisfying meal.

Arriving with her mother at 11:20am, the writer found every private room already reserved, so they took a table and ordered the boiled pork, mackerel and loach soup set for 18,000 won, the whole-octopus seafood pancake and the pork loin cutlet, all served with turmeric rice. With private rooms, a kids' play room and a waiting lounge with free drinks, Irojeong is the family-gathering restaurant her mother asked to return to first.

Goyu is a Korean dining restaurant inside a renovated hanok on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The Goyu Set costs 46,000 won and comes with Korean beef yukhoe (raw beef) buckwheat noodles, gangdoenjang ssambap (rice and wraps with thick soybean paste), crispy bulgogi and one complimentary drink; a family of three shared the set plus one extra bowl of rice and left full. The child ate the odor-free Korean beef crispy bulgogi best, making Goyu an easy, non-spicy Korean meal for kids and adults in Gyeongju.

Timing the visit to the 11:30am and 2:30pm bake times, the writer tried the 3-flavor premium gift set of 6 (₩27,000), split into 4 apple pies, 1 red bean pie, and 1 chocolate pie. The whole-apple texture instead of apple jam was the most memorable part, making it a solid alternative to the usual Gyeongju bread for a travel gift.

After a heavy first night of drinking on a Pohang trip, the writer showed up right at opening to order the ₩40,000 Ppwang/set mulhoe and squid pajeon, cured further with the complimentary squid bean sprout soup. With its spacious dining room and large parking lot, it worked just as well as a hangover-cure spot as it would for a family or group gathering.

Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry (hoddu-gwaja) dessert shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, using 100% domestic rice dough and whole walnuts. The writer ordered the 24-piece mix (₩27,000) with red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha, six each, plus an extra choice of red bean, and found the individually wrapped pastries in glassine paper and a sturdy gift box traveled without any damage. A good pick for a Gyeongju travel souvenir or a holiday return gift.

Pohang crab lunch with kids: Bakdal snow crab set at Gallilli Daegae

Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang is a snow crab and hoe (raw fish) restaurant in Jukdo Market, Pohang. Visiting for lunch with family and kids, the writer ordered the bakdal snow crab set since red snow crab was out of season, and the staff brought the kids warm abalone porridge as a starter, followed by mulhoe, seafood, bakdal snow crab, and crab roe rice. Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi and tart dessert shop tucked in a Hwangnidang-gil alley in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a quiet weekday the writer picked up four mochi — peach, gold kiwi, fig, and fresh chocolate — and found them noticeably bigger and more satisfying than the one-bite-sized mochi from Hanjeongseon.
