Fruit mochi vs Hanjeongseon size comparison in Gyeongju: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi and tart dessert shop tucked in a Hwangnidang-gil alley in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a quiet weekday the writer picked up four mochi — peach, gold kiwi, fig, and fresh chocolate — and found them noticeably bigger and more satisfying than the one-bite-sized mochi from Hanjeongseon. Buy four or more mochi and get ₩500 off each, making it easy to try several flavors at once.

I love fruit mochi so much, and I never expected Gyeongju to have a place selling it too..! This is Tareudang, a dessert hotspot on Hwangnidang-gil. I'd bookmarked it after seeing it on Instagram reels, and since I was in Gyeongju anyway I picked some up to try haha. Let's dig into how it compares to Hanjeongseon, which is the other famous one.
Tareudang's location, parking, and waiting
Tareudang

Hwangnam Mochi Tareudang is down the alley off the Hwangnidang-gil intersection, the same one where Ichinisando is. I'd heard there's a wait on weekends, so I visited on a quiet weekday. For parking, you can just pull over briefly on the roadside.

The storefront is colorful and there's even a separate waiting line. If there's a specific fruit mochi flavor you want, I'd recommend getting there early! If you go late, they might be sold out and you'll miss it ㅠㅁㅠ

Tareudang is takeout-only, so there's no seating area! I was just looking over the menu about to order when suddenly a crowd of customers rushed in .. I guess I must have some kind of customer-attracting energy

The menu and the discount for 4 or more
Check the photos for the menu! Gold kiwi, pineapple, shine muscat, Dubai chocolate, mango, peach, and since it's fig season right now, there's fig mochi too. On the day I visited, shine muscat and mango were sold out. I was so curious about the mango ..! 🥹 Besides fruit mochi, there were various types of tarts and watermelon juice too!

After some careful deliberation I picked out 4 and got them packed — buy 4 or more mochi and it's ₩500 off each!! Definitely take note and get the discount haha. Also, if you write a photo review you get a box + cooler bag as a gift, so keep that in mind if you're buying these as a present.

The mochi I picked .. ⭐️ I brought home peach, gold kiwi, fig, and fresh chocolate

Peach mochi — heftier than Hanjeongseon
Peach mochi. It's got some real heft to it ,, they made my peach mochi fresh right when I ordered it..!! Peaches are so sweet these days that this one seems super popular .. It's double-wrapped, with plastic inside the hanji (traditional paper) wrapping.

I cut it in half. You can see it's clearly sweet, soft white peach and yogurt cream studded with vanilla bean ... plus the soft, moist mochi skin ㅠㅠ

It's genuinely so good. Hanjeongseon's is small, truly a one-bite piece, but this one is really substantial ㅠㅠ Number one fruit mochi in Gyeongju

Fig mochi — yogurt cream plus red bean paste
Fig mochi. Lately Hanjeongseon's fig mochi has been blowing up on Instagram reels... but Tareudang in Gyeongju has fig mochi too. This one's also pretty hefty and sizeable! The surface is generously dusted with castella (sponge cake) crumbs.

This one has both yogurt cream and red bean paste inside. The fig itself was sweet and made just right ㅠㅠ The ingredients are harmonious and delicious 🤤

Gold kiwi mochi — a hit with older tastes
Gold kiwi mochi. Honestly, I'm not usually that into kiwi mochi ..! but I got it out of curiosity, and wow. It's very sweet and melts right in your mouth. My mom and dad said it was delicious and told me to buy more ... fruit mochi definitely seems to win over older folks' tastes too

Fresh chocolate mochi — best eaten chilled
Fresh chocolate mochi. Visually it looks like a chapssal (glutinous rice) donut, but inside the soft mochi there's a hefty amount of rich, high-quality fresh chocolate 🤎 As a chocolate lover, I can tell — they're using really good chocolate here. It tastes like Royce fresh chocolate ..... This one's genuinely better eaten nice and cold.
That was a delicious meal :) Hwangnidang-gil has tons of great dessert spots, but Tareudang is my favorite among them! I'll be back soon to buy the mango mochi.
