Hangover mulhoe opening-run at Ppwang Mulhoe, Pohang's Yeongildae

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant on the coastal road by Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. After a heavy first night of drinking on a Pohang trip, the writer showed up right at opening to order the ₩40,000 Ppwang/set mulhoe and squid pajeon, cured further with the complimentary squid bean sprout soup. With its spacious dining room and large parking lot, it worked just as well as a hangover-cure spot as it would for a family or group gathering.

With a vow to blast our hangovers away with an ice-cold, tangy mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), we drove straight to Ppwang Mulhoe, a well-known mulhoe spot in Pohang. Here's the thrilling hangover-cure story!

Self-service side dish corner and squid bean sprout soup

In one corner of the restaurant, there was a self-service station where you could freely help yourself to side dishes. And above all, the variety was huge. I usually don't love overly salty side dishes when eating out, but here everything was seasoned just right, and it suited my taste perfectly.

The side dishes were clean and tasty from the start, so we ended up filling up before the main dish even arrived haha

Table set with side dishes

A bean sprout soup comes as a default along with the side dishes. I tried a spoonful to settle my stomach and... this really is a hangover cure!! It's even loaded with squid inside!

Ppwang/set mulhoe: the ultimate hangover cure

The main mulhoe (Ppwang/set mulhoe) has arrived! Even from the photo you can tell how huge the bowl is and how generously it's packed with ingredients. Fresh raw fish, squid, and even sea squirt fill the bowl along with all kinds of other seafood.

Pohang-style, we first gently mixed the sauce and raw fish together to fully enjoy the fresh texture, then poured in the chilled broth and slurped it down... and just like that, the alcohol from the night before was completely gone 😗

Fried squid served as a review-event freebie

Fried squid from the review event

The fried squid came as a complimentary side (receipt review event)! The portion wasn't huge, but it was just the right size to enjoy alongside the main dish as a little bonus. It went perfectly with the mulhoe — a really nice extra treat!

Squid pajeon: crispy outside, tender inside

The squid pajeon (savory seafood pancake) we ordered as a side was also amazing. As soon as it hit the table, I cut into it with my chopsticks and it was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside. It was generously loaded with squid too, so every bite had that chewy texture, and switching back and forth with the cold mulhoe was the best combo. It went down so well with drinks!

Spacious enough for group and family gatherings

The dining room was much more spacious and comfortable than expected, making it a great place to visit with a group. The large parking lot in particular means you can bring a group or family with zero parking stress.
