A review of Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch, a well-known restaurant I found while traveling around Gyeongju.
I wanted to share this with anyone looking for good food around Gyeongju's Bomun Lake area, or for a restaurant Gyeongju locals actually eat at — it's a Korean restaurant specializing in nourishing home-style dishes.

Where do you park?
In Hyoeunok's own private parking lot.

If that lot is full, you can use the free public parking lot right across from the restaurant.

The exterior: hanok tiled roof
Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch pairs a classic hanok tiled roof with a modern white signboard in a stylish combination. To the left of the entrance stand signs for minari hanwoo yukhoe muljjim (raw beef with water dropwort in cold broth) and Gyeongju-style minari yukhoe makguksu (buckwheat noodles with raw beef and water dropwort), and stone steps lead into a clean, tidy dining room.

A large signature menu board is mounted on the outer wall. It shows detailed photos and descriptions of the restaurant's representative dishes — ppyeodeumbuk galbitang, sohanmaritang, and the Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot set — building anticipation before you even step inside.

Mother-of-pearl decor inside
A mother-of-pearl vanity, just like the one I remember seeing at my grandmother's house. Such a nostalgic piece.

The interior is a spacious, comfortable dining space. Ornate traditional mother-of-pearl inlay patterns on the walls combine with warm lighting to create an upscale atmosphere.

The tables are spaced well apart with comfortable chairs, making it a great spot to bring your parents or gather with family.

A sign announcing a free gift of Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi for verified Naver receipt reviews, along with promotional material for Horang Yuja Saengmakgeolli (tiger-and-citron unfiltered rice wine), which was chosen as the toast drink for the APEC summit dinner.

A neatly arranged self-service side dish corner on one side of the restaurant. It's stocked full of crisp, well-seasoned kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and spicy kimchi, plus a kettle of warm broth for refills and a microwave — a thoughtful touch for guests.

Baby chairs are also on hand, so families with young kids can dine comfortably too.

How to eat the beef rib hot pot
Every table has a helpful sign explaining how to best enjoy the beef rib hot pot. It walks through the full course step by step — from step one, heating the meat, to enjoying the vegetables and sauce, then on to the shabu-shabu kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and finally gondre juk (wild aster rice porridge).

Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot and gondre juk

Rice topped with nutty sesame, seaweed flakes, and fragrant gondre (wild aster greens) simmered right into the rich hot pot broth becomes a soft, comforting gondre juk that settles your stomach.

A plate of shabu-shabu beef to enjoy alongside the hot pot vegetables. The bright red, freshly marbled beef is outstanding, and briefly blanching it in the hot broth gives it a wonderfully tender texture.

The sheer, mountain-like visual of the Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot as it arrives at the table. A cute little Hyoeunok Gyeongju flag is planted atop the thick, meaty short ribs, with fragrant minari, bean sprouts, and mushrooms piled generously underneath.

The portion size is huge.

The hot pot bubbling away, looking absolutely irresistible. The deep, clear broth draws out the flavor from the crisp minari and tender rib meat, delivering a clean yet deeply savory taste.
Final thoughts
Everything about Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch was on point — the heartfelt nourishing food, the friendly service, and the spotless dining space. If you're hunting for a good restaurant around Gyeongju's Bomun Lake area, or one that Gyeongju locals swear by, I'd recommend visiting without a second thought.
