Walking down a street lined with quiet, traditional hanok made me crave something neat and hearty in Korean food, so while looking for a nearby spot I ended up at Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch. Isn't the joy of traveling really about eating good food? 😊

The moment you arrive, this Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant hits you with such an antique exterior. The building keeps the charm of a traditional hanok intact, so the tiled roof looks lovely and the whole place gives off a warm, cozy feeling — like being invited into someone's welcoming home 😀

It was pretty windy that day, and the sound of the wind chime out front was so nice 🔔

Where's the best place to park?

Maybe because it's a beautifully renovated old house, the whole place has this warm, comfortable, full-of-sentiment vibe 🧡 Parking space is on the small side, so I'd recommend using the Hwangnam Culture Center public parking lot right nearby! It's about a 3-minute walk 👍🏻

Restaurant atmosphere and remote waitlisting

Silver mushroom and black nurungji (scorched rice) chicken stew, dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken), beef tripe hot pot, pork kimchi dureuchigi, sumi dakbokkeumtang, five-color vegetable jjimdak — there's a wide range of Korean dishes, and the reviews all looked good!

What we ordered in the room with the window view

We were shown to our room, and the view out the window was so good 💕 We ordered the beef tripe hot pot we'd been craving since the day before! For rice, we picked one egg rice and one pollock roe rice, and added sikhye and cola too.

The basic side dishes came out first along with the egg rice and pollock roe rice. What even is this visual on the egg rice and pollock roe rice ㅠㅠ It looked so good 💛 Had to hold off eating until the beef tripe hot pot arrived.

How was the beef tripe hot pot?

The beef tripe hot pot came out right after, already fully cooked, so you just bring it to a boil and it's ready to eat.

The broth in the beef tripe hot pot was so rich and clean that I was amazed from the very first spoonful. Koreans really are all about hot pot. There's no tripe smell at all, and the tripe itself is soft and packed in generously, with plenty of glass noodles, mushrooms, and vegetables too — it's basically a rice thief 💛

How the egg rice and pollock roe rice paired with the hot pot

The egg rice we ordered had a soft-boiled yolk that burst and spread its nuttiness through your mouth, and it paired perfectly with the hot pot broth! The pollock roe rice was seasoned just right too, and it surprisingly went great with the beef tripe hot pot.

Finishing it off perfectly with a cool glass of Dongyang sikhye — isn't this exactly what a Gyeongju Korean restaurant should be like? 😉 Getting to enjoy such a varied Hwangridan-gil Korean menu made it such a good meal.
