Pohang crab lunch with kids: Bakdal snow crab set at Gallilli Daegae

In short

Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang is a snow crab and hoe (raw fish) restaurant in Jukdo Market, Pohang. Visiting for lunch with family and kids, the writer ordered the bakdal snow crab set since red snow crab was out of season, and the staff brought the kids warm abalone porridge as a starter, followed by mulhoe, seafood, bakdal snow crab, and crab roe rice. The fried snacks arrived a bit cold and the kids' menu was limited, but the crab itself was a hit.

At the entrance, tanks full of imported bakdal snow crab and seafood greet you. The kids stopped to say hi to the crabs and watch them move around before we went in.

The menu — bakdal snow crab set since red snow crab was out of season

The menu hangs on the wall: Gallilli set, Yeongdeok snow crab set, red snow crab set, domestic bakdal snow crab set, bakdal snow crab set, shrimp set, assorted hoe, and more. When we visited, red snow crab was out of season, so we ordered the bakdal snow crab set instead.

Kids' starter: abalone porridge

Since we came with kids, they brought out abalone porridge for them first. It was warm and nutty, and settled their stomachs before the real meal began.

First spread — mulhoe, fried snacks, soy-marinated crab

The first round of dishes arrived: mulhoe, fried snacks with bread and sauce, corn cheese, soy-marinated crab, seasoned raw fish, salad, and wraps. The meal was officially underway.

I'm a total soy crab lover, so it was great to run into it here haha. The seasoned raw fish and salad were fresh too.

What could've been better

The fried snacks would've been better piping hot — they came out a bit cold, which was a little disappointing. The kids happily munched on the bread and sauce, and the nicely browned corn cheese was tasty too. Most of the menu is set courses, with only mulhoe and hoe deopbap sold à la carte, so the only real add-on for kids is steamed egg. It'd be nice to have a few more kid-friendly options.

A variety of side dishes also came out — peanuts, beondegi (silkworm pupae), and quail eggs braised in soy sauce. Cracking the peanuts open one by one was fun, and my husband was happy to see his favorite beondegi show up.

Then a clear broth soup arrived, with mussels, hard clams, and bean sprouts at the bottom. Simmered up bubbling, the broth was refreshing.

Second round — abalone, sea squirt, conch

Next came the seafood: abalone, sea squirt, conch, and fruit. Once again, Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang in Jukdo Market delivered a nice range of seafood to try.

There was also this parboiled squid dish — stuffed inside like squid sundae, but in a tiny, adorable size haha.

Cold mulhoe needs no introduction — tangy, sweet, and fresh, it's a must-eat when you're in Pohang.

Even ordering the bakdal snow crab course at Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang in Jukdo Market, you still get to enjoy raw fish alongside it, which was a nice bonus.

My husband and I were busy working through the side dishes, mulhoe, raw fish, and seafood, while the kids — who can't eat raw fish yet — waited eagerly for the crab to arrive haha.

Conch meat dipped in chojang sauce

How is bakdal snow crab different from red snow crab?

We rolled the conch out and dipped it in chojang (vinegared chili sauce) — the seafood here definitely felt fresher.

Finally, the bakdal snow crab we'd been waiting for arrived. I'd only ever had red snow crab before, so this was my first time trying bakdal, and the leg meat was noticeably sweeter and softer than red snow crab — delicious.

The kids had already eaten lunch before we came, but once I cracked open a few bakdal crab legs for them, they said the crab was delicious and ate it right up haha.

Crab roe rice and the closing spicy soup

After the crab, crab roe rice is a must. It's an extra ₩2,000 per order, but it's so good — I'd definitely recommend trying it.

Last came the spicy soup, simmered up bubbling and eaten with rice — an absolute rice thief. The bakdal snow crab at Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang in Jukdo Market, Pohang, is genuinely delicious, so go give it a try.
