Korean restaurant in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil: mackerel gondre rice

Hyangtaek is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju known for its mackerel gondre rice. Visiting just after the Friday lunch rush meant no wait, and an order of mackerel gondre rice, eggplant doenjang rice bowl, and a side of grilled mushroom platter arrived with different banchan set for each main dish. The seasoning was light and the presentation neat, making it a lunch spot that works equally well for a date or a meal with parents.

Ddeoggogi Ttaenggijae is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Yongdam-ro in Hyeongok-myeon, Gyeongju, specializing in ddeotgogi (pork scraps) and samgyeopsal. Gyeongju bakery's premium 6-pack with chocolate pie: Gyeongju Tokyo

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a whole-apple pie bakery tucked inside Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. The writer bought two boxes of the premium 6-piece set, which mixes apple pie with chocolate (shokora) Tokyo pie, for family and as a gift, and tried the pies fresh out of the oven. The chocolate Tokyo pie stood out most, rich but not overly sweet, and the pies keep 2 days refrigerated or 7 days frozen, making them an easy Gyeongju souvenir.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant for a spicy rice bowl breakfast: Dongyang

Dongyang Baekban is a hanok-style Korean restaurant on Poseok-ro in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil. I split caviar-egg rice and pollock roe rice, mixed them into the spicy sauce from sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken with potatoes), and added deulgireum yukjeon (perilla-oil beef pancake) on the side, with boneless chicken making it easy to just pile onto rice. If you're after a meal where you mix rice into a spicy sauce, Dongyang Baekban fits the bill.

Sushi set for two-three near Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan: Sonsi

Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch is a sushi and Japanese restaurant on the university street in front of Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. Two people ordered the value set for 2-3 (sashimi rice bowl, 4 fried shrimp, buckwheat noodles, 12 pieces of sushi) plus the Sonsi ankimo futomaki roll during a packed dinner rush, finishing nearly everything, and even the cold buckwheat noodles came in a portion generous enough to be its own dish. Using date-syrup sushi soy sauce, Sonsi Sushi delivers quality well above its university-town prices, making it a must-return spot on the next Gyeongsan trip.
