Black pork galbi kim-ssam trick and cold noodles: Jeju Samchun

Jeju Samchun is a Jeju black pork restaurant just 3 minutes on foot from Hamdeok Beach. Two adults and a child ordered the jokaseteu (neck and pork belly, 500g, ₩60,000) with an extra 200g of gabrisal and a bowl of cold noodles, while a staff member grilled everything start to finish and shared a tip for wrapping the meat in seaweed with salted pollock roe. After a typhoon ruined swimming plans, this relaxed sit-down dinner turned out to be a real win.

Marinade soy sauce with wasabi on garlic galbisal: Dolgyeok Hanwoo

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a charcoal-grilled hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant in Yeondong, Jeju City, close to Jeju Airport. Visiting at 6pm on the first evening of a trip, the writer ordered three servings of 1++ manong galbisal (garlic marinated short rib) and doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice), and especially remembered the staff-recommended combo of manong gochu ganjang (garlic chili soy sauce) with wasabi, plus a generous beef seaweed soup. A good pick for a first night in Jeju when beef sounds better than black pork.

Jeju Dongmun Market donut oranda in 6 flavors for kids: Cheongchuni

On the last day of a Jeju trip, the writer picked up oranda donuts at ₩3,500 each in six flavors — carrot chocolate, hallabong, strawberry, cookies and cream, gold cheese and chocolate — plus Udo peanut oranda that melted in the mouth. Worth a look whether you remember old-style oranda as hard, or you're just after a snack the kids will love.

A bowl of jjamppong with a sea view is the writer's idea of the ultimate Udo trip moment.

3-person 750g black pork dry-aging set and pork belly in Jungmun

Oreumak Garden Jungmun Main Branch is a 40-year-old black pork dry-aging restaurant in an alley next to Jungmun Tourist Complex in Seogwipo, Jeju. Recommended by a local, the writer tried the 750g set for three (dry-aged black pork ribeye, neck, and jowl) alongside pork belly — the pork belly was clean and mild with no gamey taste, while the dry-aged trio stole the show with rich juices and savory depth. Prices run a bit higher than a typical Korean BBQ spot, but for properly aged Jeju black pork, it's worth going back.
