Buying oranda at Dongmun Market on the last day in Jeju

On the last day of my Jeju trip, I stopped by Dongmun Market near the airport to pick up some oranda (traditional Korean puffed rice snack).

Dongmun Market has all kinds of food, Jeju specialty products and souvenirs gathered in one place, so it seems like a lot of people drop by there on their last day haha.

I went to where the biggest line was, and it turned out to be Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch. Dongmun Market has several entrances, so just wandering in blindly can get confusing.

Store location: Gate 2 or Gate 9

If you're visiting Cheongchuni Oranda, it's easiest to find by entering through Gate 2 or Gate 9.

Cheongchuni Oranda is a shop where you can buy a variety of traditional snacks including oranda and gwajul (deep-fried rice puff snack).

Oranda donuts at ₩3,500 each

The basic oranda we all know comes in various flavors like gamtae (seaweed), Udo peanut, and yuzu, and

I also got to see a product that reinterprets oranda as an oranda donut. Individual price was ₩3,500! The shapes and colors of the oranda donuts were so pretty that I picked them the moment I saw them!

You could also buy oranda in bulk.

Whenever I come to Jeju I always buy tangerine gwajul, and they had that too~

This one is called tuijeul, which has a nutty yet clean taste apparently.

Tastings and gift wrapping

There were plenty of samples set out for tasting, so there was zero need to agonize over what to try before buying!

If you buy a set, they wrap it up beautifully for gift-giving. There's also a receipt review event going on, so definitely take part and get plenty of tasty snacks~

How does Udo peanut oranda taste?

I worried it might be hard, but it melted away in my mouth — really surprising.

Trying all 6 oranda donut flavors

The oranda donuts were individually wrapped, so it felt really hygienic. I chose carrot chocolate, hallabong, strawberry, cookies and cream, gold cheese and chocolate — 6 flavors in total.

I still had vacation left the day after my Jeju trip, so I had a leisurely moment pairing the Udo peanut oranda and chocolate oranda donut with an Americano haha.

The nutty oranda coated in chocolate paired with the Americano was seriously delicious!

Cookies and cream oranda donut

The cookies and cream oranda donut felt like a fusion snack mixing foreign and Korean treats. Cookies and cream is a flavor you can find often these days in milk or other snacks, so it was delicious as expected!

Cutting it open

I cut the oranda donut open with a knife. The cross-section looked like it was holding air — crispy yet light and fluffy at the same time. Maybe because of that airy texture, it had a crisp bite while still feeling light.

Carrot chocolate that the kids loved

One of the ingredients that comes to mind when you think of Jeju is Gujwa carrot, and the carrot chocolate oranda donut was extremely Jeju-like. I really love products that carry the scent of local specialties like this~

The mini carrot-shaped decoration was so cute, and it had a sweet taste that the kids absolutely loved. It was a fun menu item that reminds you of Jeju carrots~ I didn't manage to get a photo, but the hallabong oranda donut had a bright citrus aroma that would suit anyone who likes a refreshing snack.

A good pick for a Jeju gift or kids' snack?

When I think of oranda, I used to picture the hard, teeth-sticking old-fashioned snack that elderly people enjoyed in the past, but Cheongchuni Oranda has reinterpreted it in a variety of flavors suited to modern tastes, turning it into a snack kids can enjoy too — I found that really impressive.
