An Ilsan sushi spot found after a weekend drive
On a weekend, my friend and I took a nice little drive out toward Ilsan, and once our stomachs started growling, we went looking for a hot place to eat. That's when we spotted a sushi restaurant that grabbed our attention just from its looks. I'd been craving clean, high-quality Japanese food, so I dug through lists of well-known Ilsan sushi restaurants and turned the wheel straight toward Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch. It's located near Goyang Aunuri, so it was super easy to find, and the moment we pulled up, the clean, polished exterior had our expectations sky-high before we even walked in.

What's the vibe and menu like?
Stepping inside, a cozy yet pleasant interior welcomed us — tables neatly arranged under soft lighting gave off a comfortable atmosphere. It looked perfect for solo dining, but also chic and calm enough for a date or a hangout with friends. Once we sat down and read through the menu, the lineup was impressive: various sushi made with fresh fish, plus crispy fried dishes and hearty noodle dishes. Wanting to try a bit of everything together, we ended up ordering the today's sushi set, tonkatsu (pork cutlet), and udon (noodle soup).

Shrimp allergy? They swapped the neta without a hitch
There was one thing I was a little nervous about when ordering — since I have a shrimp allergy, I asked if the shrimp in the today's sushi set could be swapped for something else. When I mentioned it carefully to the staff, they were incredibly kind and happily switched it out for another fresh neta (sushi topping) right away, and honestly, I was touched before the meal even started. That kind of attentive care for a guest's specific request had my mood shooting straight up before we'd taken a single bite.

The service croquette and cucumber salad
As soon as we ordered, a neat little spread of basics arrived — the sushi overall looked fresh and just right, and the complimentary croquette and cucumber salad were also great. The freshly fried croquette, crispy outside and packed with soft potato filling inside, practically melted the second I bit into it, and the sweet-and-sour, crunchy cucumber salad brightened up my palate perfectly. With this kind of generous spread and careful hand, it's no wonder locals call this a beloved Goyang Aunuri restaurant.
The today's sushi platter
Finally, the star of the show — the sushi platter — arrived, and the colorful, vividly hued fish neatly arranged on a long wooden board was a real work of art. The stickiness of the rice and the seasoning of the vinegar were in perfect balance, and the fish slices on top were thick and glistening. Mixing a bit of fresh wasabi into the soy sauce, I worked my way through white fish, salmon, and tuna in order, and with every bite, the chewy texture and clean umami flavor burst in my mouth. There wasn't a hint of fishiness — just pure ocean freshness — and I truly felt, in that moment, why this is a proper Ilsan sushi restaurant worth seeking out.

Fish-cake-packed udon and crispy-outside, juicy-inside tonkatsu
Right as we were still swooning over the sushi, the hot soup and fried dishes filled up the table. The udon was loaded with fish cake and had wonderfully chewy noodles, and the tonkatsu was so crispy we let out an actual gasp. Served in a large bowl generously packed with fried tofu skin, skewered fish cake, and crown daisy greens, the broth wasn't too salty and had a deep, savory flavor that kept me spooning it up nonstop. Slurping up the springy, bouncy noodles alongside the chewy fish cake felt like it hit the spot completely.

The tonkatsu served alongside was far more than just a side dish. Biting into the thick pork loin cutlet with its golden, crispy coating, dipped generously in the special sauce, gave a satisfying crunch followed by juicy meat spreading through my mouth — a textbook crispy-outside, juicy-inside cutlet. The tender meat and savory crust paired amazingly well with the sushi too, and my friend and I practically raced each other with our chopsticks to finish it off.

Verdict on the sushi, udon, and tonkatsu combo
One bite of sushi, a sip of hot udon broth, then a crunch of savory tonkatsu — it was a genuinely perfect combination that never got old. Every dish clearly had thought and care put into it, and the sense of fullness after cleaning our plates down to the last grain of rice was hard to put into words. Both my friend and I gave it a thumbs up and promised each other we'd definitely come back the following weekend — it was that good a meal.

If you're looking for a solid spot where you can enjoy high-quality sushi, crispy tonkatsu, and hearty udon all in one visit, Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is a must. With its kind service and fresh flavors that left us in a great mood, it's a wonderful Goyang Aunuri restaurant — so if you're craving proper Japanese food near Ilsan, make sure to stop by and enjoy a happy meal.
