Gijang restaurant with free rice-pot refills, seafood stew: Dongam
In short
Dongam Tteokgalbi is a Korean restaurant on Gijanghaean-ro in Gijang, Busan, specialising in tteokgalbi (grilled minced-beef patty) set meals. The writer ordered the Dongam Tteokgalbi Set at 15,000 won alongside the Hanwoo Handmade Tteokgalbi Set at 22,000 won to compare the two charcoal-grilled patties, and the table filled up fast with free refills on the rice pot and a self-bar holding tteokbokki, tofu kimchi and jajang sauce. For a filling Korean meal after seeing Haedong Yonggungsa or Osiria, Dongam Tteokgalbi was a good fit.

I went out to Gijang and wanted a really filling meal, so I stopped by Dongam Tteokgalbi. There are a lot of attractions nearby like the Lotte Outlet Dongbusan branch, the Osiria tourist complex, and Haedong Yonggungsa, so I was looking for somewhere to eat around there. That day I especially wanted proper Korean food with a real rice course, so I went in with high expectations.
The name itself signals a tteokgalbi (grilled minced-beef patty) specialty spot, but once I actually ate there, it wasn't just tteokgalbi on its own — it came as a full set with side dishes, soup, stew, and wrap vegetables, which made it even more satisfying. So today I'll introduce Dongam Tteokgalbi (˶ˆᗜˆ˵)

Inside Dongam Tteokgalbi: seating and whether it suits a family meal

The overall atmosphere at Dongam Tteokgalbi is clean and comfortable, which felt right for a family meal or dining with parents. Since the menu itself centers on tteokgalbi sets, it doesn't feel skewed toward any age group, and I think anyone who enjoys Korean food built around rice and side dishes rather than heavily seasoned flavors would like it.

There are various seat types, plus 6-person tables and baby chairs, so it seemed like a good spot for a family meal!! Especially around Gijang, a lot of families come out for day trips, and I thought this would be a good place to find a hearty Korean meal near the tourist spots. So for anyone looking for good Korean food near Haedong Yonggungsa, or a place to eat around Haedong Yonggungsa or Osiria, this seemed like a solid choice (*≧∀≦*)
What the writer ordered at Dongam Tteokgalbi and what it cost

That day at Dongam Tteokgalbi we ordered the Dongam Tteokgalbi Set for ₩15,000 and the Hanwoo Handmade Tteokgalbi Set for ₩22,000 ૮₍˶•🐽•˶₎ა Usually when I eat meat I end up ordering rice or side dishes separately, but here everything comes as a full spread from the start, so it was perfectly set up to eat alongside a bowl of rice!
Dongam Tteokgalbi's side dishes and self-bar: tteokbokki, tofu kimchi, even jajang

Another thing I liked about Dongam Tteokgalbi was the variety of side dishes. At a lot of Korean restaurants, ordering a meat dish only gets you a few basic sides, but here several kinds of side dishes came together, making the whole spread feel much more generous. On top of that, I was genuinely surprised to find tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes), tofu kimchi, and jajang, among other things, at the self-bar!!

There were namul (seasoned vegetable) and kimchi-type sides that go well with rice, and also wrap vegetables to eat with the tteokgalbi, so I could mix things up depending on what I felt like. Putting a piece of tteokgalbi on a wrap leaf with a bit of side dish made for a much cleaner bite than eating the meat alone. It was also great that you could just go back to the self-bar and grab more sides as needed.
First look at the full Dongam Tteokgalbi table setting

The first thing I noticed once the food arrived was just how packed the table was! It wasn't just tteokgalbi and rice sitting there alone — several side dishes, soup, and wrap vegetables all came together, so it really felt like a proper meal. With so many kinds of sides, it was more fun mixing things up than just eating tteokgalbi over and over.

Usually when I eat meat I end up ordering rice or side dishes separately, but here everything comes as a full spread from the start, so it was a great setup to eat with a bowl of rice. If you're looking for sotbap (hot-pot rice) near the Lotte Outlet Gijang, this kind of hearty Korean spread should suit you well. It felt like a good spot for whenever you want a proper meal rather than something quick after shopping (˶ᵔᵕᵔ˶)♡ᐝ
Free refills on the rice pot (sotbap)
I really loved that the rice at Dongam Tteokgalbi comes as sotbap (hot-pot rice)!! And refills are completely free, so if you're after a really filling Korean meal, I highly, highly recommend it!!!!!! There was fried rice and barley rice at the self-bar too, but this sotbap was so good I just focused on that haha
Hanwoo tteokgalbi vs. Dongam tteokgalbi: how the two patties differed

First up was the hanwoo (Korean beef) tteokgalbi. It's grilled over charcoal, so you get a subtle smoky aroma, and the clean flavor of the meat itself really came through. Being hanwoo, there was a distinct meaty savoriness when I chewed it, and it wasn't overly sweet or salty, so it went well with rice. The outside was nicely charred and appetizing while the inside stayed moist, never dry. It's delicious eaten plain, but for me it was best with a spoonful of rice and a piece of tteokgalbi on top. Adding a side dish here and there meant I could enjoy the same tteokgalbi in constantly different combinations!!

The second one, the regular Dongam tteokgalbi, had its own charm, different from the hanwoo version. It's also charcoal-grilled with a subtle smokiness, and the tender texture typical of tteokgalbi made it easy to eat with rice. In particular, it wasn't too thick or chewy, so it was soft and easy to eat without feeling heavy.
Ordering both menus together made it more fun to compare the flavors side by side. The hanwoo tteokgalbi suits you well when you want to taste the meat's own flavor a bit more, while the regular Dongam tteokgalbi is great for a hearty Korean spread with rice and sides. Personally, I think the regular Dongam tteokgalbi is plenty satisfying on its own!!!!! The basic version was really, really good too haha
The seafood-loaded special doenjang jjigae

Having a stew come with the full spread made the meal so much heartier. The special doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) has seafood in it, so the broth had a deep savory taste, and it was great to eat a spoonful in between bites of tteokgalbi and rice. Eating meat non-stop can get a little greasy, but with a warm stew alongside, I could sip the broth here and there and enjoy the meal all the way through (ू•‧̫•ू⑅)oh
With a spread like this, I think it would also work well for lunch at a good restaurant in Gijang. Rather than a quick, throwaway meal near the tourist spots, it felt like a proper meal covering rice, meat, and sides — a good fit for a family visit too!
Final verdict: who Dongam Tteokgalbi suits best

Dongam Tteokgalbi felt less like a place to just eat tteokgalbi on its own and more like a full set restaurant where you properly enjoy meat, rice, side dishes, soup, and stew all together. That day I tried both the hanwoo tteokgalbi and the regular Dongam tteokgalbi, and both had that subtle charcoal aroma and paired well with rice, which was satisfying. Especially with so many kinds of side dishes plus wrap vegetables, it felt like a really hearty meal. If you're shopping or sightseeing around Lotte Outlet Gijang or Osiria and looking for good food in Gijang for lunch, this is a solid place for a filling Korean meal (ว˙∇˙)ง
