Sokcho sashimi takeout with belly sushi: Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo

In short

Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo is a wild-caught and aged sashimi restaurant in Sokcho Jungang Market. While traveling with my niece, I took belly sushi and halibut mukgeunji salt gimbap back to our accommodation; the rich sushi and tangy, crisp aged kimchi made a satisfying pairing.

While traveling in Sokcho with my niece, we decided to enjoy sushi and sashimi comfortably at our accommodation. I got belly sushi and halibut mukgeunji salt gimbap from Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo (속초대일호방어) in Jungang Market, and my niece, who normally enjoys sushi, ate well too.

Where did I get takeout at Sokcho Jungang Market?

As I walked through an alley in Jungang Market, I spotted Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo's bright, tidy sign. The market was lively with people, and the sign said that the fish is caught directly by a fisherman.

Sushi and aged sashimi were neatly arranged in the clear display case outside the shop. When I visited, there was no fishy smell, so it felt pleasant.

What did I choose, and how much did it cost?

The display case had salmon sushi, halibut, belly sushi, and more. The fish on top of the sushi was quite thick, so I spent some time looking over the options.

For us to share, I chose halibut mukgeunji salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll) for ₩20,000 and belly sushi for ₩25,000.

How was the packaging on the way to the accommodation?

The food was carefully packed in a red insulated bag. When I opened it at the accommodation, it was still cold.

As soon as we arrived, I took out the food and set the table. When I opened the lids, the glossy fish caught my eye.

How thick and flavorful was the belly sushi?

The fish on the belly sushi was so long and thick that I could barely see the rice. It felt substantial when I picked it up with chopsticks, and a light dip in soy sauce brought out its characteristic rich, oily flavor. To my taste, it went down smoothly without any fishiness.

A little fresh wasabi added a pungent note that cut through the rich aftertaste. My niece especially liked the belly sushi, saying that it melted like ice cream.

Did the halibut mukgeunji salt gimbap pair well with the sushi?

The dish I was looking forward to even more was the halibut mukgeunji salt gimbap. It contained aged halibut and thoroughly rinsed mukgeunji (aged kimchi) in rice seasoned with sesame oil and salt.

The halibut was chewy and lightly sweet, while the mukgeunji was tangy and crisp. In each bite, I could taste the refreshing flavor of the mukgeunji alongside the springy texture of the halibut.

The salt gimbap was seasoned to my taste without needing an extra dip in soy sauce. When my mouth felt rich after the belly sushi, the mukgeunji in the gimbap freshened the aftertaste. The two dishes were good to alternate between.

What should you know before visiting?

When I went, there were already prepared items in the display case, so I could get takeout without waiting. I was also happy that my niece and I could eat comfortably at our accommodation instead of in a crowded restaurant.
