Gyeongju Korean restaurant hanok room with mom: Dongyang Baekban
In short
Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in a small hanok on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, known for chicken stew and dakbokkeumtang. After 20,000 steps around Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, a mother and daughter warmed up in a room seat with the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew (₩38,000) and rice, loaded with boneless chicken, mushrooms, ginseng and black sesame — so filling that half the rice went uneaten. If you're doing Gyeongju on foot or bringing your parents along and need a restorative meal, the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew at Dongyang Baekban is the answer.

Looking for hanok-style Korean food on Hwangridan-gil
It had been a while since I visited Gyeongju, and after touring heritage sites like Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, I really wanted to eat somewhere with that quiet hanok mood! I searched for a hanok-style Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil and Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch had the best reviews.

It's not a grand, fancy hanok — more like a small countryside hanok, which made it feel even cozier and more atmospheric! Totally recommend it for a date, too.

Two tables per room, like your own little hideout
The interior is clean and calm with a wood-tone look, made up of about 3 rooms, and each room only has 2 tables, so it felt like our own private hideout — really nice for a relaxed meal.

✨ Eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew | ₩38,000 — boneless chicken stew simmered richly with eunyi mushrooms, golden enoki mushrooms, ginseng, black sesame and nurungji (scorched rice), made for restoring your energy
My mom and I were exhausted from walking all day, so we figured we'd order the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew plus a bowl of rice to get some strength back.

Banchan and rice
They brought out the banchan (side dishes) and rice first. Nice touch — they even give you an extra bowl and seaweed flakes so you can mix up your own bibimbap with the rice 🥰

There's sesame oil and cheongyang chili peppers next to the kiosk, so you can add them to taste!

I dumped in all the banchan and mixed it up — the visual looked a bit plain, right? But every side dish was well made and perfectly seasoned, so it was really delicious!!
Eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew, ₩38,000
After a short wait, the main dish arrived. Here's the full table setting ~!

You can just barely see the eunyi mushrooms and golden enoki mushrooms poking out, but that's really the tip of the iceberg — there's a ton of mushrooms packed inside plus ginseng, and just looking at it made me feel energized!!
It comes pre-cooked, so all you have to do is bring it to a boil ㅎ_ㅎ

Once it started boiling hard, the black sesame and nurungji rose up from inside and the whole thing looked absolutely insane,,,🫢

Since it's a chicken stew, there's chicken in there too, and it's boneless for easy eating! There was also a ton of chicken ㅜㅠㅠㅠ

The eunyi mushrooms are cut into easy-to-eat pieces

Scoop it onto your own plate and dig in properly!

20,000 steps, then restorative food — how did it taste?
Can you tell how tender the chicken is just from the photo..? The nutty nurungji porridge and the light, clean chicken go together so well it just slides right down. Eunyi mushrooms, golden enoki mushrooms, ginseng, black sesame, garlic — basically everything good for you is thrown in, making it restorative food in the truest sense 🔥 We'd walked almost 20,000 steps that day getting around without a car and were exhausted, but eating this made my body warm up and I genuinely felt strength coming back. If you're traveling on foot or bringing your parents along, I highly recommend this dish ✨

We cleared everything except half the rice — after the nurungji chicken stew, we were so full there was no way we could finish the rice,, 🫠 That's how generous the portion was, and how good the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew was. Properly restored haha
If you're looking for solid Korean food and a restorative meal in the quiet hanok atmosphere of Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, I highly recommend Dongyang Baekban, especially the eunyi mushroom nurungji chicken stew ~!
