Ulsan beef gukbap restaurant for yukhoe bibimbap lunch: Boksan Haejang

In short

Boksan Haejang is a lunch-only hanwoo beef gukbap (rice soup) and yukhoe (raw beef) restaurant on Songjeong 29-gil in Buk-gu, Ulsan. Nursing a hangover from the night before, the writer ordered hanwoo gukbap for 11,000 won and a large yukhoe bibimbap for 16,000 won, and when one bowl of gukbap arrived without its meat, the owner apologized repeatedly and offered to pack a fresh portion to go. Both the broth and the yukhoe were good enough that Boksan Haejang looks set to become a regular stop.

It had been a while since I had a good, refreshing drink the night before, and by morning I was craving a hot hangover soup to reset my stomach. My gut was queasy and I was desperate for something spicy yet deep in flavor, so I didn't even hesitate — I headed straight to Boksan Haejang, a well-known spot in Songjeong, Buk-gu, Ulsan.

This is one of those places locals know well, so you have to time your visit carefully — show up even a little late and you'll miss out entirely. I was cutting it close, but luckily I made it right on time.

Neatly arranged seating inside Boksan Haejang

Step inside and instead of the usual clutter or heavy smell you get at a typical gukbap place, you're greeted by a spotless, hygienic, and pleasant interior!!

What I especially like about Boksan Haejang is that it sources directly from its own affiliated businesses — Boksan Meat, Boksan Yukgwan, and Boksan Pork Cutlet. With fewer middlemen in the supply chain, everything tastes fresh and stays reasonably priced, so I can trust the food no matter when I come.

Table set with hanwoo gukbap and yukhoe bibimbap

That day I didn't even have to think about it — I ordered Boksan Haejang's signature hanwoo gukbap along with the yukhoe bibimbap. There's no better combo for curing a hangover while filling up your stomach.

Hanwoo beef gukbap, 11,000 won: the hangover cure

Hanwoo gukbap served in a stone bowl at Boksan Haejang

The hanwoo gukbap arrives in a piping-hot stone bowl! Simmered a long time, you can taste the deep, rich flavor of the hanwoo beef broth, yet it's clean and spicy without any heaviness — so delicious.

Loaded with well-boiled radish and crunchy bean sprouts, it really clears out your stomach. For hangover relief, I don't think there's a better broth out there — hearty and satisfying in a way that just opens everything up.

The day the gukbap came with no meat, and the owner's apology

Honestly, as I was eating, I realized there wasn't a single piece of meat in the soup! Normally that would be disappointing, but since I'd had a bit too much to drink the night before, I was craving that spicy, refreshing broth way more than actual chunks of meat. The broth was so rich and deep that I happily cleaned out the whole bowl without missing the meat at all.

After finishing my meal and paying, I mentioned it to the owner just in case, and he came out from the kitchen absolutely mortified, saying it must have been a mistake. He apologized over and over and immediately offered to pack a fresh bowl for me right then!! I told him honestly that the spicy broth alone had cured my hangover perfectly and I really didn't need it, but he kept apologizing all the way until I left, clearly caring about how his customer felt. Even though the meat was missing, his sincere kindness and warmth made me feel full in a different way. Next time, give me lots of meat, please!~~

Yukhoe bibimbap, large for 16,000 won: worth sizing up

Large-size yukhoe bibimbap set at Boksan Haejang

Last time I visited I ordered the regular size, and it was so good that I was left wanting more. So this time I didn't hesitate to order the large size! The bowl arrives piled high with vivid red yukhoe that looks fresh even to the eye — total visual pass!

Yukhoe bibimbap mixed with gochujang sauce

Mixed well with the gochujang sauce that comes with it, one big bite releases the nutty aroma of sesame oil, and the chewy, tender yukhoe tastes sweet and savory. The crunch of the vegetables and the rich texture of the yukhoe worked so well together that I was glad I ordered the large size.

Why the writer will go back to Boksan Haejang

Beyond the freshness of the ingredients and the deep flavors, the owner's genuine warmth — apologizing sincerely even for a small mistake and treating customers so kindly — makes me want to become a regular. If you're in Songjeong, Buk-gu, Ulsan and craving a proper hanwoo gukbap and fresh yukhoe bibimbap for a hearty hangover lunch, be sure to stop by Boksan Haejang!
