Cheomdan Chinese restaurant, beer and ₩1,000 tangsuyuk deal: Mayway

On a Friday evening, I went with my family to Mayway, a well-known spot in Cheomdan, Gwangju.

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant newly started by Daeheung Banjeom, a place that's been loved in Gwangju for a long time.

What is Mayway like inside?

Mayway sits right on the main street along Cheomdan Riverside Road, so it's easy to spot, and the interior is really stylish.

It's decorated cleanly and prettily, and thanks to the high ceilings, the space feels open rather than cramped.

The air conditioning was cranked up pretty cold that day too, so we weren't hot at all while eating.

Now that summer's ending and the weather's cooling down a bit, they could probably ease off the AC a little. 😊 Feels like a waste of electricity, haha.

But what I loved most was how kind the owner and staff were! Everyone greeted us with big smiles, so I was in a good mood before the meal even started.

QR ordering and what the self-serve corner holds

At Mayway you order by scanning the QR code on the table, so I could take my time browsing the menu and order comfortably.

There's also a separate self-serve corner, and the corn salad and scallion kimchi were really good. Plus unlimited rice refills! But we had ordered so much food that day we didn't even have room for rice. 😂

Unlimited rice, and we walked out without eating any of it! Still, that's a pretty nice perk for rice lovers.

What three people ordered at Mayway, and the prices

There were three of us that day, and here's what we ordered:

• Half tangsuyuk ₩18,900
• Jjajang + jjamppong + tangsuyuk solo set ₩12,900
• Extra-large jjajang ₩8,900
• Jjajang ₩6,900
• Zero-sugar cola ₩2,000

It's a set where you get jjajang, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) all at once, so it's great for solo diners or anyone who wants to sample a bit of everything.

Perfect for people who want jjajang and jjamppong and tangsuyuk all at once but can't just pick one.

How thick is the pork in Mayway's tangsuyuk?

What surprised me most at Mayway was the tangsuyuk. The meat is really, really thick. I think I've never seen tangsuyuk with meat this thick before. It's labeled as using Korean domestic pork (handon), and the meat itself was so tender that a few pieces were enough to fill me up. Even though we ordered the half size, it felt pretty generous.

Ah!!! These crispy sweet potato fritters~ They're thin, so I thought 'huh?' but they're so crunchy my hand kept reaching for more, haha.

At the table next to us, someone had ordered the two-beers-plus-₩1,000-tangsuyuk event item, and I sneaked a peek — the bowl looked the same size as my half tangsuyuk. So maybe it was the half portion too... it looked really generous. I didn't do an exact comparison, but to my eye it looked pretty ample.

The deal: 2 draft beers and tangsuyuk for ₩1,000

But the thing I really regretted was the draft beer! There's one thing I truly regret here. My car! This darn car! 😂

Mayway is running an event right now where if you order two draft beers, they give you tangsuyuk for ₩1,000. A draft beer is ₩5,000 each, so two would be ₩10,000. Add the ₩1,000 tangsuyuk and it's ₩11,000 total!

"Wow, isn't this the kind of thing you have to try?"

But since I'd driven, I couldn't drink beer. 🥲 Next time, I'm definitely leaving the car at home.

Why the menu lineup felt tight for a group of three

With such a varied menu, a bigger group could order jjajang, jjamppong, tangsuyuk, and even the stone-griddle jjajang and share it all around. But with just three of us, we had to think carefully about portion sizes and couldn't order as freely as we wanted. That part was a little disappointing. I realized you really need a bigger group to properly try the range of dishes here. Next time I'll bring more people along.

After we finished eating, the staff also brought out strawberry ice cream. 🍓

The ice cream itself was delicious, and even the bowl it came in was nicely chilled, so we finished off the meal with a great dessert.

Would I go back to Mayway?

Mayway had a lot going for it — the clean, stylish interior, high ceilings, kind owner and staff, tasty self-serve corner, generous event deal, and varied menu lineup. The tangsuyuk especially stuck with me. And being able to try jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all at once in the solo set is a real plus. Next time, I'm definitely leaving the car at home so I can properly enjoy the two-beers-plus-₩1,000-tangsuyuk deal. 😂
