Daegu restaurant with a green onion kimchi bar: Geumdeungeo Deulanguil
In short
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired grilled mackerel restaurant on Deulanguil near Suseong Lake in Daegu, where the fish is cured in nuruk salt before grilling. The writer came with her mother and her brother and his wife, ordered wood-fired grilled mackerel for two and fire-charred stir-fried pork for two, refilled green onion kimchi (pa-kimchi) and japchae several times from the self-serve banchan bar, and finished with buckwheat crackers and an iced americano. With a private room available, Geumdeungeo worked well as a family gathering spot even with an older parent along.

What kind of restaurant is Geumdeungeo on Deulanguil, Suseong Lake?
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired mackerel restaurant on Deulanguil in Suseong-gu, Daegu, specializing in mackerel cured in nuruk (fermentation starter) salt. I visited my parents' home in Daegu and was looking for a place to eat with family when I stopped by this Suseong Lake spot. Since it's right on Deulanguil, it's worth a look if you're searching for good restaurants around Suseong Lake's Deulanguil area too.
It's a place where mackerel grilled in a wood-fired oven pairs beautifully with nuruk salt, the banchan (side dishes) are set out as neatly as a fancy hanjeongsik (Korean set meal), and there's a salad bar where you can help yourself to endless refills — great for a hearty family meal.

Above all, the restaurant is spacious and comfortable, and there's a private room too, so it would work fine as a spot for family or friend gatherings.

Geumdeungeo hours and parking
This Suseong Lake Deulanguil restaurant is open 11:00–21:20 with a break time of 15:30–17:00. Parking is available on the building's ground floor, including mechanical parking. Since the restaurant is fairly large, the tables were spaced out comfortably.

Lots of people come here for family or friend gatherings, so it seems like a good idea to reserve ahead on weekends.
Mackerel cured in nuruk salt, then grilled in a wood-fired oven
Inside the restaurant, an introduction video about Geumdeungeo plays continuously. From the video, I learned that Geumdeungeo is run by a nuruk salt craftsman, and that the mackerel goes through a nuruk-curing pretreatment to remove any fishy smell before being grilled in the wood-fired oven. This seems to be what gives the mackerel a clean flavor that even people who don't usually like mackerel can enjoy without hesitation.

Geumdeungeo menu and prices: what we ordered
Geumdeungeo's main dishes include nuruk salt-cured wood-fired mackerel at ₩19.0(만) and fire-charred stir-fried pork at ₩20.0(만), with a cockle salad add-on available for ₩9,000. We ordered two servings of wood-fired mackerel and two servings of stir-fried pork. Since we were visiting as a family, we decided to try both the mild mackerel and the spicy stir-fried pork together.
Side dishes laid out like a hanjeongsik spread
After ordering, we waited a bit and the banchan started arriving one by one.

Quite a spread, right? The whole wooden table comes out as one piece, with grooves carved into the wood custom-made to hold the dishes firmly in place. The food was plated neatly too — and it wasn't just about quantity, each individual banchan was genuinely delicious. My mom said the banchan were tasty, and even remarked,
This alone is hanjeongsik-level — I could finish two bowls of rice with just this~
she said.

How the banchan at Geumdeungeo tasted
The lotus root was coated in perilla seed powder, giving it a crunchy, nutty flavor.
The seaweed salad was sweet and tangy, instantly perking up the appetite, and had chickpeas mixed in — eating them one by one gave a clean flavor and nice texture.
The doraji (bellflower root) was spicy and crunchy without any bitterness, well-seasoned throughout and delicious.

There was also salad, japchae, and stir-fried anchovies, plus seokbakji (radish kimchi) that was tasty too — but the green onion kimchi was especially delicious.
Made with thin green onions, it had a fresh, crunchy texture, great seasoning, and just the right amount of salt, so I kept reaching for more. The green onions weren't too spicy, so I went back for refills several times.

The seaweed was gopchang gim (a thicker-textured type), delicious dipped in soy sauce, and even better with fish egg jeotgal (salted seasoning), which added extra umami.
The doenjang (soybean paste) stew felt like a doenjang soup with vegetables in it, not too salty and pleasantly savory.
Unlimited refills at the self-serve banchan bar
Another great thing about Geumdeungeo is that you can go back to the salad bar and get as much banchan as you want.

The food at the salad bar was also plated neatly on pretty dishes, which made scooping it out feel oddly satisfying.

When you think of a self-serve bar, you might picture something a bit rough-looking, served in plain trays, but this one felt clean and upscale, which I liked even more. Being able to freely go back for more of whatever banchan you wanted made for a hearty family meal.
Mackerel grilling in the wood-fired oven of the open kitchen
The wood-fired oven was set toward the back of the open kitchen. You could actually watch the mackerel turning golden brown inside the oven, and since it's positioned toward the back of the kitchen, no smell or heat from the grilling reached the dining area.
What wood-fired mackerel with nuruk salt tastes like
The mackerel finally arrived. Fresh off the wood-fired oven, the skin — scored with neat cuts — looked incredibly appetizing.
Two servings came with two whole mackerel, cleanly prepared. On one side of the plate sat nuruk salt, tinted slightly green and mixed with a yellowish salt.

Dipping a bit and tasting it, the saltiness wasn't overpowering — it had a clean, mild flavor. Dipping the mackerel lightly in the nuruk salt, I could taste a clean flavor with none of the usual fishiness.

My brother, who isn't usually a fan of mackerel, tried it and said, 'this is a rice thief!' before devouring it.
Fire-charred stir-fried pork, full of smoky flavour
The stir-fried pork arrived, and the spicy aroma wafting up made my mouth water instantly.

It carried a full smoky, charred flavor beneath a sweet-and-spicy sauce, and stayed juicy and tender, easy to eat. My mom enjoyed the spicy stir-fried pork too. Since the wood-fired mackerel was mild and the stir-fried pork was spicy, I was glad we ordered both dishes together.
Dessert at Geumdeungeo: buckwheat crackers and apricot juice
After finishing our meal, thoroughly full, we checked out the dessert options.

Buckwheat crackers were set out, and even though we were full, I grabbed one.

Another dessert option was coffee or apricot juice. Taking an ice cup from the freezer and pouring in americano gave you a cold iced americano — as good as one ordered from a café — a nice way to end the meal.
Is Geumdeungeo a good spot for a family meal in Suseong, Daegu?
I visited Geumdeungeo, this Suseong Lake Deulanguil restaurant, with my mom and my brother's family while at my parents' home in Daegu. The restaurant was spacious, with generous spacing between tables, making the self-serve bar easy to use.

Above all, having a private room made it a good spot for family or friend gatherings with several people. The menu felt fine even for a meal with elderly family members, and the banchan were neatly made and clearly homemade with care.
The wood-fired mackerel was crispy outside and tender inside with a clean, mild flavor, and pairing it with nuruk salt made that mild flavor even cleaner. The stir-fried pork was also sweet-and-spicy with a smoky char and tender texture, easy to enjoy. Above all, being able to go back to the salad bar for as much banchan as you wanted made it a great place for a hearty family meal.
If you're looking for somewhere to eat with family in Daegu, or a spot for a family gathering on Suseong Lake's Deulanguil, Geumdeungeo is worth considering.
