Cheomdan Chinese restaurant for menbosha shrimp toast: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, serving stone-griddle jjajang and other Chinese dishes. The writer ordered the solo set of jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk along with seafood stone-griddle jjajang and 9-piece menbosha (deep-fried shrimp toast), then stirred the free rice into the stone griddle to make fried rice. Wide seating, a self-serve bar and a free strawberry ice cream dessert made Mayway a satisfying stop.

If you want real fire-wok flavor and Chinese food made with heart, let's go here~~

Inside Mayway: spacious seating in Cheomdan

So spacious it feels like you can finally breathe! The vibe is exactly my taste too

Spacious, clean interior of Mayway

Walking inside, the place was really spacious and clean.

The tables were spaced well apart so it never felt cramped, and there was a nice mix of cozy sofa seats and comfortable table seats.

Perfect for a family meal out, a work dinner, or a gathering with friends.

Mayway's self-serve bar with free rice

Wait, the rice is free?! I was so touched by the owner's generosity at this self-serve bar

As we settled in and looked around, what caught my eye right away was this self-serve corner.

The real jackpot perk here is that rice refills are unlimited and FREE!!! 👍 These days a single bowl of rice can cost you ₩1,000 or ₩2,000 elsewhere, but here you can grab as much as you want without a second thought (and the self-serve bar is kept super clean and hygienic!).

Pickled radish and onions are the basics of basics, and on top of that there's savory corn kernels — one of my favorites — plus free scallion kimchi, all generously stocked.

When Chinese food starts feeling a bit greasy, one bite of that scallion kimchi cuts right through it. The owner's sense for this is truly top-notch...✨

What comes in Mayway's solo set: jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk

Looking at the menu, there were so many good options I nearly had decision paralysis ㅠㅠ In the end, we went with what felt like the most solid, well-rounded combo.

  • Solo set
  • Stone-griddle jjajang
  • Menbosha (9pc)

Is the solo set good for one diner or a group?

Usually at a Chinese restaurant you want jjajang, but also jjamppong, and also tangsuyuk, right? haha Mayway has a solo set for exactly that, and it's priced really reasonably 👍

Solo set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

It comes out in a special divided dish with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk each in their own section — the composition is really generous.

Set with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk

• Jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) = the broth is deeply spicy and rich, the kind that hits the spot right away! Packed with seafood and vegetables, the broth is seriously deep and satisfying.

• Jjajang (black bean sauce noodles) = look at that glossy shine! The sauce has real depth of flavor and the noodles are so bouncy you just slurp them right up haha

Glossy jjajang noodles

• Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) = made with domestic fresh sirloin. The meat is thick and packed full, and even the portion in the solo set is... seriously insane 😋

The meat is genuinely thick and packed full inside! The sweet-savory sauce soaks moistly into the crispy coating, and every bite gets a wow 👏

Seafood stone-griddle jjajang turned into fried rice

And now today's highlight!! The stone-griddle jjajang arrived sizzling on a hot stone plate 🔥 Steam was rising the moment it landed on the table — the visual alone was overwhelming.

Stirring it around with chopsticks, there was squid, shrimp, and even cute little baby octopus — seriously loaded with seafood.

The distinct savoriness of the seafood and that smoky wok-fire flavor melted beautifully into the jjajang sauce, giving it real depth. You absolutely have to wrap it with the scallion kimchi!! It's honey-sweet, seriously 👏 And even after slurping down all the noodles, it's not over — remember that self-serve bar I mentioned?!

Self-serve white rice ready to mix into the stone-griddle jjajang

I grabbed a generous bowl of warm white rice from the self-serve bar and dropped it right onto the hot stone plate! Mixed it all up and... oh man,

With a sizzling sound, the stone-griddle jjajang fried rice comes together, crisped up nicely. The noodles were great, but mixing in the rice is truly legendary — you have to try it with rice too.

Menbosha (shrimp toast), 9 pieces: crisp outside, juicy inside

9-piece menbosha filled with shrimp

Between golden, perfectly fried slices of bread is a thick layer of shrimp filling. On top, a sweet-spicy chili sauce and a house special sauce are drizzled on — the visual alone gets a 👍

With a satisfying crunch, the inside reveals bouncy, moist shrimp filling — the textbook definition of crispy outside, juicy inside...❤️

Free strawberry ice cream to finish at Mayway

Strawberry ice cream dessert served at the end of the meal

To my surprise... the staff brought out this cute little ice cream dessert!! In a pretty bowl, pink strawberry ice cream topped with fresh blueberries — the visual was really lovely.

After all that rich, oily Chinese food, this sweet and refreshing bite cleaned up my palate completely — the perfect ending! Getting a complimentary dessert on top of everything else was the best.
