Aewol bibim noodle restaurant, extra-large mul-bi-naeng: Handam Guksu
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is an ocean-view noodle restaurant on Aewol-ro in Aewol, Jeju. After too much bread on a Jeju trip, the writer craved something spicy and ordered the extra-large dongchimi (radish water kimchi) bibim noodles for 11,000 won and dombe naengsuyuk (chilled sliced pork) for 15,000 won, eating the noodles mixed first and then pouring in the dongchimi broth for a mul-bi-naeng style. The extra-large bowl was almost too full to mix, and wrapping the thin pork slices in the bibim noodles was the best combination.

Why something spicy instead of bread in Aewol: Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch
I'd eaten way too much bread on this Jeju trip.. suddenly craving something spicy(?) and protein-heavy.. the original plan was black pork but I quickly switched to a red menu!
The road to our accommodation went through Aewol, so we stopped by "Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch," a famous pork noodle restaurant in Aewol, for a late lunch.

The weather in Aewol was so good when we arrived~~~ the sky was so pretty, and it felt like the red bibim noodles we wanted would taste amazing too?? haha

Ocean-view noodle restaurant in Aewol: ordering at the table kiosk
I was surprised the moment I walked into Handam Guksu — there was an ocean view! I had no idea it was an ocean-view noodle restaurant, we just searched for a tasty spot and came straight here. Being able to eat while looking out at the Aewol sea.. so nice! An ocean-view noodle restaurant 😋
We used the table kiosk to easily order the bibim noodles (extra large) and dombe naengsuyuk.

Self-serve kimchi and pickled radish at Handam Guksu
True to its reputation as a local Aewol favorite, the self-serve bar had kimchi and pickled radish that looked great just from the color. I hadn't seen kimchi this red and pretty in a while. Kimchi really is the soul of noodles.. (or maybe the red just looked prettier because I needed to cure that bread hangover..?)

We scooped only as much as we'd eat onto our plates from the self-serve bar. Our order came out in under 10 minutes!! Ta-da!!

What we ordered: extra-large dongchimi bibim noodles and dombe naengsuyuk, with prices
✔️ What we ordered ✔️ Dongchimi bibim noodles (extra large) 11,000 / Dombe naengsuyuk 15,000

Dongchimi broth came out alongside, so — dongchimi bibim noodles~ I mixed it up first, planning to pour the broth in later..
It was my first time trying dombe naengsuyuk, and the slices were super thin — I had a feeling wrapping them in the bibim noodles would be amazing. Ooh.. thin enough to wrap perfectly around the noodles.
With bean sprouts and cucumber mixed in too, I can't even imagine how good this will taste.. anyway, time to mix it up nicely 🤤
I ordered the extra-large size and there was so, so much that it was hard to mix properly? (which is a good thing, honestly)
The dombe naengsuyuk, my first time trying it, was chewier than expected. Just as I'd imagined.. I wrapped it neatly in the bibim noodles and ate it that way!

The bibim noodles.. the color is insane..! Just looking at it makes my mouth water.. so appetizing..

I also tried the dombe naengsuyuk with pickled radish and wasabi on top, but personally I liked it better with the noodles. (to each their own taste..)
How to turn the bibim noodles into mul-bi-naeng with dongchimi broth
After thoroughly enjoying it as bibim, I poured in the tangy dongchimi broth and tried it mul-bi-naeng style too! I only ordered one bibim noodle dish but it felt like eating a water noodle dish as well!!
If the bibim noodles are delicious, of course the mul-bi-naeng version is too 💚 Cool and spicy, so good.

A 30-minute walk at Handam Beach after lunch
We demolished the dombe naengsuyuk and bibim noodles in no time..!! Stuffed, we walked to nearby Handam Beach for about 30 minutes — being able to take a little stroll after eating is kind of rare, and it was so nice walking while looking at the pretty Aewol sea. Healing doesn't have to be anything fancy.. this is what healing looks like!! haha
For lunch in Aewol, definitely try "Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch" with the dombe naengsuyuk and bibim noodles..
