Sashimi without the sides for two at a Magongnaru raw fish restaurant
In short
Singsing Hoe Susan Sijang is a raw fish restaurant near Magongnaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul, running since 2019. Ordering halibut and rockfish without the ssaeki (extra side dish) set, two diners paired the sashimi with a bottle of Chungha and refilled the tofu kimchi and mussel soup that came as basic banchan. A comfortable spot when you want to focus on the sashimi itself, since you can choose whether to include the extra sides.

A raw fish restaurant we had for dinner while out in Magongnaru — Singsing Hoe Susan Sijang (싱싱회 수산시장) 🤍 I'd been craving chewy sashimi for a while, so this was the place. It's close to Magongnaru Station so it was easy to get to by public transit, and it worked well whether you're going for a full meal or just a light drink.

An interior that really feels like a fish market

The moment I walked in, it felt exactly like its name — a fish market. The atmosphere is lively and relaxed, so it's better suited to casual gatherings with friends or coworkers than a formal occasion!

Singsing Hoe Susan Sijang has been running steadily since 2019. Magongnaru is the flagship location, and they've since expanded to Wonheung, Jichuk, and Jeongbalsan. A place you can trust, having been loved for its live sashimi for years now 🫢

The interior was more spacious than I expected. The tables weren't packed too close together, so it was comfortable to eat, and there were seats set up for larger groups too. 💗 It can hold up to 100 people, so it's perfect for a group work dinner.

By dinnertime the place was pretty packed with customers. Even so, we were seated at a table for two and could enjoy our sashimi quietly.
With ssaeki vs. without — what's the difference

At Singsing Hoe Susan Sijang, when you order a sashimi dish you can choose 'with ssaeki (side dish set)' or 'without ssaeki'!
- With ssaeki: seasoned raw fish vegetables, baek kimchi, tofu kimchi, clam soup, fried shrimp, egg rice bowl, steamed egg, corn cheese on iron plate, buttered king oyster mushroom
- Without ssaeki: seasoned raw fish vegetables, baek kimchi, tofu kimchi, clam soup

We wanted to focus on the sashimi, so we ordered without ssaeki. Even without it, basic banchan still comes out — tofu kimchi, mussel soup, baek kimchi, and seasoned raw fish vegetables, all good to pair with the sashimi!

The tofu kimchi and mussel soup were surprisingly delicious … 🤍 The mussel soup especially had such a rich broth that we asked for a refill! A hidden mussel soup gem

The crisp texture made it great to eat alongside the sashimi.
Halibut and rockfish taste review

We also ordered a bottle of Chungha to have with the sashimi

What we ordered was halibut and rockfish! It looked glossy and fresh. The slices weren't cut too thin either, so it was easy to pick up piece by piece.

The portion was good for two to share. 🤓 The halibut especially had a clean but chewy texture I loved. The more you chewed, the more a subtle sweetness came through, and it wasn't oily at all, so I kept reaching for more.

The rockfish had a slightly firmer, springier texture than the halibut. It's delicious dipped in chojang (vinegared red pepper sauce), and just as good wrapped with ssamjang, garlic, and perilla leaves. No fishy taste whatsoever, it was so good I ate faster than usual. 😆

The halibut fins in particular were just fatty enough to slurp right down. The perfect match for a bottle of Chungha 🫢 It was the ssaeki-free set, but that actually let us focus on the sashimi's real flavor, which I ended up liking better!

Glug glug glug .. 🤍

We also ordered extra steamed egg and enjoyed it! At Singsing Hoe Susan Sijang, being able to choose whether to include the ssaeki set makes it easy to order according to your taste and budget. If you want to enjoy fresh, chewy halibut and rockfish without breaking the bank, or if you're looking for a raw fish restaurant for a group dinner in Magongnaru, this place is worth a visit. Next time I'd like to go with a bigger group and try the ssaeki-included set.
