First visit to Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch, a Japanese restaurant in Daegu

Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch is a tendon and rice-bowl Japanese restaurant at 9 Suseongmot 6-gil, Suseong-gu, Daegu. I went for a solo weekday lunch.

I've been to the Shinsegae branch of Ongijeong a few times, but this was my first visit to the Suseong Lake branch. ☺️ It turned out to be quite a bit bigger and more spacious than I expected.

Outdoor waiting area and parking lot in front of the restaurant

There was an outdoor waiting area out front, plus a wide parking area, so it looked like a fine spot to visit by car too :)

Inside Ongijeong: seating, group tables and baby chairs

Inside, Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch has high ceilings and generously spaced tables. Further in, there's a separate section with wide tables and baby chairs ready to go.

Once inside, the place was way bigger than I'd expected. High ceilings, generous gaps between tables — it never felt cramped, just comfortable and airy :)

Further inside, there was yet another seating area. The wide tables looked great for groups, and with several baby chairs on hand, it seemed comfortable for visits with kids too.

Ongijeong menu and how kiosk ordering works

The menu was huge in variety — best new dishes for 2–3 people, rice bowl and tempura combos, nabe (hot pot) sets, obanzai (Japanese side dishes), several kinds of tendon, steak-don, salmon bowl, tempura soba sets, shrimp tempura udon, bukkake cold udon, and various side dishes. Also, if you write a Naver receipt review, you get to choose 2 shrimp tempura pieces or a soda!

Ordering kiosk on the table

Ordering was simple through the kiosk at each table. I went with the tendon set that day :) This place also does delivery, and while I waited for my food, delivery orders kept coming in nonstop. (Seeing that makes me a little envious of people who live nearby, haha.)

What the 4,500-won tendon set includes, and how big it is

At Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch, adding the set option (+₩4,500) to a tendon gets you mini udon and 3 pieces of chicken nanban alongside it. After about 10 minutes, the tendon set arrived.

Full spread of the tendon set

It was my first meal of the day and I was pretty hungry, so I wanted to eat a bit of everything, which is why I went for the set :)

Full generous serving of the tendon set

But once the food actually arrived, I was surprised at how generous it was, haha. The tempura pieces were piled on nice and big, and the mini udon — despite the name — turned out to have a pretty substantial portion. The chicken nanban pieces were quite large too, so ordering the set really did give me a table full of food, haha.

The 3 pieces of chicken nanban

The chicken nanban comes with a mini cabbage salad, and the chicken was full of meat and served warm, so I enjoyed it a lot. It had a sweet-salty flavor that was perfect as a side.

The mini udon

Chewy noodles visible in the mini udon broth

The mini udon that came with it had nice chewy noodles with great texture. The broth was the familiar udon flavor with a subtle savory depth, and it paired well with the tendon.

Which tempura comes on Ongijeong's tendon

Tendon topped with shrimp and vegetable tempura

My tendon came with shrimp, egg, lotus root, shiitake mushroom, seaweed, perilla leaf, sweet pumpkin, enoki mushroom, and shishito pepper. Each piece of tempura was big, crispy on the outside and moist inside, with great texture. The sauce drizzled over it was on the sweet side and paired well with the tempura — overall, a really satisfying meal ☺️

Is Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch worth a lunch stop?

📝 The tendon set turned out way more filling than I expected. I was happy to get to try tendon, udon and chicken nanban all in one meal. I'd love to come back and try other menu items next time. If you're looking for somewhere to eat around Suseong Lake, this place was clean and generous with portions, so it's worth a visit :)
