It's a semi-hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal)-style restaurant that grills fish at high heat — the kind of thing that's hard to make at home because of the smell and smoke.

Geumdeungeo's dining hall with high ceilings and full glass windows

The high ceilings and full glass front let in plenty of light, giving the interior an open feel rather than a cramped one. There's a spacious main hall plus clean group seating and private rooms, good for a relaxed meal.

How do you order at Geumdeungeo?

Sign explaining the nurukjang-cured grilled mackerel

Geumdeungeo's signature is grilled mackerel cured in nurukjang salt — made with sun salt from New Zealand's clean waters plus the beneficial microbes of malted rice — then grilled in a high-temperature wood-fired oven!! Order one grilled fish main per person and add a side of pan-fried pork or cockle salad for a full, set-meal-like spread!

They brought us disposable aprons without us even asking haha

Seasonal banchan, the self-serve bar, gopchang gim and mallow soybean soup

Geumdeungeo's hanjeongsik-style table setting

A table set out hanjeongsik-style. One reason Geumdeungeo is a good spot for a family meal is the main dish, but also the seasonal banchan made with in-season ingredients~

Seasonal side dishes including green onion kimchi and seaweed salad

Mildly spicy green onion kimchi and crunchy seokbakji (radish kimchi) as the base, plus tangy seaweed salad, and perilla-seasoned lotus root, doraji (bellflower root), and pickles — all healthy ingredients.

Scissors, tongs, and other utensils you fetch yourself, and there are forks too, which is handy for kids or foreign guests who aren't used to chopsticks.

Geumdeungeo's self-serve banchan bar

The seasonal side dishes mentioned above can be refilled at a cleanly maintained self-serve bar, so you never run short during the meal.

Gopchang-gim, rice, and seasoned soy sauce

Unseasoned gopchang-gim (laver) with a scoop of rice and seasoned soy sauce — eating it after a while, the plain flavor keeps you reaching for more haha. Thanks to the food staying true to its natural taste rather than drowning in MSG, this seems like the kind of place older diners would prefer!

Mallow soybean soup simmering on the induction burner
A bowl of savory mallow soybean soup

The savory mallow soybean soup isn't as sharp as the doenjang you get at a meat restaurant, but it's seasoned with dried shrimp and fits well with the overall meal. + Simmer it longer on the induction burner and the mallow softens and tastes even better.

Nuruk salt curing and a 450°C wood-fired oven: Geumdeungeo's grilled mackerel

Today's main: wood-fired grilled mackerel for two. 📌Geumdeungeo = nuruk-jang-'geum' (salt) + go-deung-'eo' (mackerel). They say it's cured with nurukjang salt based on clean New Zealand sun salt, not the low-quality processed salt that's just about saltiness.

A plate of wood-fired grilled mackerel for two

Grilled in an oven over 450°C so the surface gets coated golden while the inside stays moist~ ⭐ Flake it apart with your chopsticks and you can see the moistness right away.

There's no fishy smell at all, so even older diners who are sensitive to fish odor should be happy. It's already seasoned from the nurukjang curing, but if you like it saltier there's salt on the side to dip — and yes, that dipping salt is nurukjang salt too~

Close-up of the glossy grilled mackerel flesh

Glossy and shiny.. with just enough fat that it's never dry.

A piece of mackerel set on top of rice
Mackerel and rice wrapped in gopchang-gim

A thick chunk of mackerel set right on the rice — even just eaten like that it's a total rice thief, and wrapped in gopchang-gim it's clean and savory too. Anyone who likes Korean food, from adults to kids, can pick it apart with no complaints.

Flame-grilled spicy pork as a side dish

Pan-fried pork cooked with almost no liquid

A side of stir-fried pork to enjoy alongside the grilled fish. Rather than the soupy style you get at a Korean buffet, it's pan-fried over direct flame so there's almost no liquid — the sauce clings tightly to the meat.

The lean-to-fat ratio is just right so it's never dry, the crunchy onion adds texture, and the long-sliced perilla leaf adds fragrance.. If there's someone in your group who prefers meat over fish, it's an easy, affordable add-on.

Brewed coffee after the meal and the take-home banchan corner

Coffee machine at the restaurant's dessert corner

After the meal, there's a dessert corner in the restaurant where you can get coffee, hot or iced, to your taste (saved myself a café run haha).

Take-home banchan corner in the fridge by the entrance

Near the entrance there's a fridge with banchan you can take home — salted shrimp, seaweed salad, jeotgal (salted seafood), gim-bugak (fried seaweed chips), and ppeong-twigi are all there.
