Suseong, Daegu Korean restaurant with fried mandu sides: Cafe Dongi
In short
Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch is a Korean restaurant serving single-diner set meals at 65 Suseong-ro 69-gil in Suseong-gu, Daegu, inside the Lotte Castle The First shopping arcade. Arriving around 1:30pm, the writer ordered the grandma's spicy octopus stir-fry set meal and the bulgogi yeolmu (young summer radish) bibimbap, adding the 50-year-recipe juicy fried mandu (dumplings) and egg-coated meatballs as sides, and even those sides stayed juicy and full of flavor. Nothing at Cafe Dongi is harsh or overly spicy, making it an easy Suseong lunch spot for all ages.

Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch, the Suseong-gu Korean restaurant I visited this time, pays attention to everything from the rice itself to the sauces and side dishes, making it a place anyone would love.

Parking is available at the Lotte Castle The First commercial building parking lot, and since I visited around 1:30pm, a bit after the lunch rush, there were spots left so parking was easy.
Cafe Dongi has become such a common chain that you can find a branch in almost any neighborhood in Daegu these days. With its reputation as a Suseong-gu Korean restaurant favorite, I went in with high expectations.

Inside Cafe Dongi: the self-bar and eating alone
The inside of Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga was clean, and even past the lunch hour it was nearly full. Being a well-known restaurant in Suseong, it drew everyone from solo diners to people of all ages.

Since the place is so popular, there was even a waiting area, and at the self-bar you could fry your own egg. High chairs were also available, making it a good restaurant for families too.
What makes the rice at Cafe Dongi different?
The first thing that caught my eye at Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga was the rice. In Korean food, rice is easy to take for granted, but it really determines how satisfying the whole meal feels. Cafe Dongi apparently holds to the principle of using good ingredients even for something as basic as rice.
They say they source Grade 1 Gimpo Geumssal rice from the DMZ clean zone directly, using it at its freshest. Not just the rice but every ingredient is said to be carefully selected in-house, which should appeal to anyone who wants a meal made with good ingredients even if it's just one meal.

What we ordered at Cafe Dongi
At Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga I ordered the Grandma's Octopus Stir-fry set meal, Bulgogi Yeolmu Bibimbap, 50-year juicy fried mandu (dumplings), and egg-coated meatballs. There's a wide range of menu items, from single-diner grill dishes to neat single-diner set meals.
Even though they use good rice and ingredients, the prices are affordable, which made it clear this is a place that cares about customers more than profit. With kids' menus and a variety of sides, it's a restaurant good for any age group, and takeout is available too, which was convenient.

Grandma's spicy octopus stir-fry set meal on a single-diner grill
Even with many customers, the chef worked quickly and the dishes came out without much of a wait. The Grandma's Octopus Stir-fry set meal, served warm on a single-diner grill, came with octopus stir-fry, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), seasoned bean sprouts, pickled gungchae, stir-fried anchovies, sauce, and a dessert drink.

The octopus stir-fry wasn't spicy but had that great smoky char, and paired with the doenjang jjigae, a bowl of rice disappeared in no time. Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga is said to make everything in-house, including sauces and side dishes — and while there are plenty of convenient premade products these days, the fact that they make everything themselves made it a comforting, delicious place to enjoy a meal with family.

The plump octopus in the stir-fry had even more flavor dipped in the sauce, and it went so well with rice that I couldn't stop eating.

Stir-fried with various vegetables for that smoky char, the octopus stir-fry wasn't overly strong, so I could keep eating without feeling weighed down — a flavor anyone would like.

Summer-only bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap
I couldn't forget how good the yeolmu (young radish) bibimbap was the last time I had it, so I ordered it again. It's magic how the bibimbap tastes even better when the rice itself, the most basic element, is already delicious. For under ₩10,000, it was really generous.
It came with basic side dishes and a perilla seed and seaweed soup, making for a truly filling meal. I threw in a fried egg and mixed it all together thoroughly.
Plenty of bulgogi and yeolmu gave it a great texture, and with generous sesame oil, it hit exactly my taste!
It was a sticky, delicious yeolmu bibimbap that made me want to devour it. Since it's a summer-only menu, I'll be sad to see it go and definitely want to eat it again before it disappears.

Best sides at Cafe Dongi: fried mandu and egg-coated meatballs
Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga, a Suseong-gu Korean restaurant favorite, is delicious even down to the sides. I'd already tried the sweet and sour pork before, so this time I ordered the mandu (dumplings) I'd been curious about. From their size to their golden-brown look, they raised my expectations — so how did they taste?

These weren't just ordinary fried mandu — they burst with juice and the natural flavor of the ingredients came through. Even though I went in with high expectations, they exceeded them. If even the sides are this good, no wonder so many people come here.

This is my favorite side at Cafe Dongi — the egg-coated meatballs. Coated in egg and pan-fried to a golden brown, they were the perfect side dish for rice.
Packed with bits of vegetables, the meatballs had extra flavor from the egg coating. Not salty, mild yet still full of flavor — genuinely delicious. A must-order side!

With my mouth truly happy now, I threw in some bean sprouts to the bibimbap too and finished off the seaweed soup, which paired so well with it.

I proved this was a genuine favorite the way I always do — with an empty bowl. It's a great place to visit whenever you're craving good rice and a properly made Korean set meal. Above all, using good ingredients and serving homemade food and sauces really showed how much sincerity they put into every meal.
