Post-hike lunch in Danyang after Jebibong: Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap

In short

Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is a Korean restaurant near Gyeonggyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, serving ssambap (rice with leaves for wrapping) made with black garlic, the local specialty. Three hikers arrived at 1pm on a weekday after climbing Jebibong and ordered two black garlic spicy pork ssambap and one black garlic boiled pork ssambap, which came with black garlic rice, fresh wrap greens and a blue crab doenjang stew. The black garlic was mild rather than pungent, and the meal made a filling lunch for refuelling after a hike.

Why we chose Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap for lunch after hiking Jebibong

It had been a while since I went hiking with my sibling and their spouse, and this time we chose Danyang's Jebibong, a peak that offers a sweeping view of the beautiful Chungju Lake. After finishing a satisfying hike while soaking in the gorgeous scenery, my legs were shaking and my stomach was growling loud and clear. After working that hard on the mountain, surely we'd earned a good lunch, right?

Looking for a good restaurant near Danyang's Gyeonggyeong Market to fill our hungry stomachs, we found Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap, a place serving ssambap (lettuce-wrap rice) made with Danyang's specialty black garlic. After a hike, meat is great, but doesn't a hearty spread of ssambap with fresh wrap greens also sound just right? It seemed like a way to get both health and fullness, so we headed over without hesitation.

Where to park: Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market public lot

For parking, you can use the Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market public parking lot, which is close to the market — a good spot to look around before or after your meal. We parked there too and walked over to the restaurant, so first-time visitors shouldn't have to worry about parking.

How busy is it at 1pm on a weekday?

We visited around 1pm on a weekday, and even though it was a bit past the usual lunch rush, the place was full of customers. As you'd expect from a well-known restaurant near Gyeonggyeong Market, it was bustling with both tourists and locals enjoying their meals. We thought a weekday would mean it'd be quiet — turns out we were pretty naive about that, haha.

The menu is all built around black garlic ssambap. Since there were three of us, we ordered two servings of black garlic pork ssambap and one of black garlic boiled pork ssambap. You order easily through the table-order kiosk at each seat, and disposable aprons are set out on one side of the restaurant for anyone who needs one. Aprons on, sauce-splatter worries gone — we were ready to eat! Now all that was left was filling the stomachs we'd emptied out on the hike.

Side dishes and fresh wrap greens on the table

As soon as we ordered, side dishes and fresh wrap greens quickly filled the table. We were also given garlic-and-anchovy ssamjang (dipping paste) and gochujang (chili paste), both great to pair with the wraps. Just top the greens with meat, garlic, and that savory ssamjang, and you're set — honestly, the spread alone was enough to get my appetite going.

Is the black garlic rice too strong-tasting?

The rice came out right away too. The black garlic rice had a mellow, subtle black garlic aroma that wasn't overwhelming at all — if anything, it added a nutty, savory depth that made it delicious. I was a little worried the black garlic flavor or smell might be too strong, but it turned out lighter than expected and paired well with both the pork and the boiled pork. Even people who don't usually eat black garlic could enjoy this comfortably as a lunch in Danyang.

Sweet-and-spicy black garlic pork we kept reaching for

From the moment the black garlic pork landed on the table, a delicious aroma wafted up and got my mouth watering. It was packed with big chunks of meat and plenty of vegetables like onion and green onion, with the spicy stir-fried pork topped generously with glossy black garlic sauce. The tender meat, spicy-sweet seasoning, and the subtle sweetness of the black garlic sauce came together for a flavor quite different from your usual stir-fried pork. A bite of spicy pork, a spoonful of rice — for lunch in Danyang, this isn't optional, it's basically an automatic recommendation.

The plate of tender black garlic boiled pork

The black garlic boiled pork was soft and moist, with a tender texture that melted the more you chewed. It had no off odors, was light and nutty, and was plenty tasty even without sauce. The black garlic sauce was placed on just one side, so you could enjoy one bite plain and light, and another dipped in the sweet sauce for a richer taste — two different flavors depending on your mood. My chopsticks were busy going back and forth dipping and not dipping, but my mouth was pretty happy, haha.

How to build a full ssambap wrap in one bite

Piling black garlic rice, pork, and garlic generously onto the fresh wrap greens and eating it in one big bite was genuinely delicious. The crisp greens, spicy-sweet pork, and savory black garlic rice all came together perfectly in the mouth. I got greedy and piled the wrap too full, so it was a bit much to fit in one bite, but flavor-wise, it was completely satisfying.

Blue crab doenjang stew: clean, savoury broth

The doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) was loaded with blue crab, tofu, and vegetables. After eating pork and boiled pork, a spoonful of this stew with its refreshing seafood-infused broth cleaned up the palate nicely. The savory yet slightly spicy broth paired so well with the meat that my spoon kept going back for more. Finishing off meat with doenjang stew is a combination that never fails.

Verdict: Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap as a post-hike lunch

Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap, which we visited to fill our hungry stomachs after hiking Jebibong, was satisfying with its generous spread of black garlic rice, pork, boiled pork, and doenjang stew. The black garlic flavor wasn't overpowering, so it was easy to eat without any hesitation, and wrapping the fresh greens with plenty of meat and rice felt like it was recharging the energy we'd spent on the hike. It's close to Gyeonggyeong Market too, so it's a great spot to browse the market afterward — if you're looking for a healthy, filling lunch spot in Danyang, or a recommendation for a hearty, hanjeongsik-style restaurant in Danyang, this place is worth a visit.
