Rice-chestnut loaf and crumbly walnut bread, sliced to go: Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a hanok-style takeaway bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno 3-ga, Seoul. Stopping by for errands nearby, the writer picked garlic bread, rice-chestnut loaf, and walnut bread, and the staff sliced everything neatly into a box so nothing got crushed on the way home. The chewy rice-chestnut loaf, crisp-topped walnut bread, and garlic bread that tastes even better reheated in the oven made for a satisfying takeaway haul.

Ta-da! I arrived at Munhwa Bakery! The hanok-style exterior really caught my eye! By the way, there's a sign asking customers to enter in groups of two. There were already customers inside, so I watched the situation for a moment before going in!

As soon as I stepped inside, I came face to face with delicious breads!! As a total bread lover, I couldn't hide my excitement just from the smell alone~ Let me show you the varieties in more detail now!

What kinds of bread are there?

Ta-da! Such a huge variety, right?! There were so many breads I love that it was hard to choose haha. The garlic bread loaded with garlic sauce looked delicious! And I was really curious how the onion bagel would taste — the combination of onion and bagel! The coffee bread also caught my eye with its long shape~ I thought it would go great with a cup of coffee! Oh, the prices are written below too, so take a look! I started scanning everything with hawk eyes, trying to decide what to get haha. I only have one stomach, but this looked good~ that looked good~ this one too~~😄

After much deliberation, I chose garlic bread, rice-chestnut loaf, and walnut bread! Haha. I already love garlic bread and chestnut loaf, so I was looking forward to seeing how Munhwa Bakery's version would taste~ And the walnut bread had a crumble-like topping, so I got curious and bought it too haha.

How do they package the bread?

Packaging matters a lot for takeaway bread~ They sliced everything neatly and packed it into a box! Haha.

Thanks to that, I was able to bring it home in great condition~

Tasting review

1. Rice-chestnut loaf

A chewy piece of rice-chestnut loaf

The rice-chestnut loaf is dense and chewy, studded with whole chestnuts throughout haha. The chestnuts weren't too sweet, which made it easy to eat~ Nutty, chewy, and delicious!!

2. Walnut bread

Whole walnut bread with crisp exterior

The walnut bread's crisp exterior gave such a fun texture! You can probably tell from the photos too?! And inside, as you can see, there are walnuts~ The nutty crunch paired really well with the bread! Haha.

3. Garlic bread

The garlic bread was packed with sauce inside~ Since it was neatly packed in a box like this, I could bring it home cleanly! Sometimes if it gets squished on the way, both the shape and taste suffer ㅠㅠ I took a bite of the pre-cut garlic bread and my mouth filled with sweet, soft garlic flavor! Haha, no need to say more about how good garlic bread tastes haha. Perfect for a snack~ Later I reheated it briefly in the oven, and it turned crispy and delicious that way too haha.

What I'd get next time

It was great to enjoy delicious, nutty breads at Munhwa Bakery, a well-loved bakery near Jongno 3-ga. They also mentioned that Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that same day, and donates any leftover products to those in need! Next time I visit, I'd like to try other varieties like the coffee bread or onion bagel~!
