You know Jongno 3-ga has a ton of great bakeries, right?! Among them, when I want that old-school neighborhood bakery feel but with genuinely good bread, I really recommend 'Munhwa Bakery.' I heard it's called one of Seoul's top three bakeries!
This was the day of my friend's housewarming party, so I packed up some bread to share as a gift. So excited haha

Takeout only, two groups enter at a time
First off, Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery, and fresh bread keeps coming out! Since the shop is small, only two groups are let in at a time and they pay right away — that's the system. So even if there's a line outside, the turnover is super fast! There's a big sign that just says 'bread' so you can spot it right away!

From Jongno 3-ga Station it's about 5 minutes? on foot. Meeting friends after a weekend morning workout for good food... happiness. By the way, isn't the weather so soft and hazy lately?

The bread lineup while waiting
A shot I took while waiting outside! On the left there's injeolmi/peanut/mugwort rice cake/cheese/cream cheese/milk cream bread, but I skipped those since I wanted to grab the best of the best! Took less than 5 minutes to get in!!

Looking back at the peanut bread photo now, the visual is amazing.... The loaves are huge so it's really good value for the price

Squid ink milk bread
I picked the squid ink milk bread first! I always get this at Sungsimdang too, but honestly this one might have been even better than Sungsimdang's... haha. The key for squid ink bread is that the dough has to be chewy — and this was chewy and delicious. It's not overly salty, and the condensed milk filling isn't too sweet either, so the sweet-salty balance was just right!

Onion bagel
And then the onion bagel! Since turnover is so fast, they must be baking constantly, because the stock looked huge and there were so many new breads too. That bread smell wafting through the air — my favorite smell in the world~!

There are loaf breads too. Rice-chestnut loaf/rice-cheese loaf! Sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread! The white bean paste bread looks so pretty. I love sweet potato and only just now noticed there's sweet potato bread, from this photo........ (because I was short on time)

Coffee bread
My second pick was the coffee bread! It's coated in what looks like custard powder but is actually mocha bread crumb, and it wasn't too sweet, which made it even better!!!! Pairs so well with coffee, ugh

Signature garlic bread
And this place's signature, best-selling item — the garlic bread!!!!! The garlic aroma isn't overpowering, but it also doesn't get buried under condensed milk or butter — the sauce hits just the right intensity, and the baguette itself was neither too hard nor too soft, just the right density! It's basically the textbook definition of garlic baguette...? Even my picky-eater friend loved it

How fast is the packing?
If you need a paper bag they'll give you one for free, and they wrap everything up super fast, like in a flash lol. So even though I only had about 20 minutes? I still managed to leave without being late :)

The breads are pre-baked and already packaged like this, so they just grab and wrap them right away. Next time I definitely need to try the chestnut loaf and sweet potato bread too. Sweet potato is love...... it's got my heart

The garlic bread gets put into an open-top box and then into a bag, so once you get home you don't even need to transfer it to a plate — you can just cut along the pre-scored slices and eat it easily!! The weather's so nice too, so stopping to grab some on your way home from a walk through Ikseon-dong is just perfect~!

Wrap-up
Munhwa Bakery, the place where I got the bread I enjoyed at the housewarming — highly recommend. And the value for money is soooo good!!! This kind of bread is rare to find in Jongno............. Seosullo-gil is nearby too, so it's a great stop on the way there or back
