Hapjeong patio Korean BBQ with 3 spice levels of pork ribs: Champpoppo

In short

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a pork rib (jjokgalbi) restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 6, with an open-air patio section that feels like eating outdoors. Five dishes — soy jjokgalbi, seasoned jjokgalbi and extra-spicy seasoned jjokgalbi, plus cheese bomb steamed egg and tuna mayo rice ball — came to 54,000 won, and since the ribs are pre-grilled for 15 minutes, they only need warming on the grill. Even for someone weak with chili, the extra-spicy level was manageable, so Champpoppo is an easy Hapjeong meat restaurant where everyone can order to taste.

One-line review — Pork ribs you pick by taste, from soy to seasoned to extra-spicy: great for a Hapjeong get-together or a date.

Who should eat at Champpoppo Jjokgalbi in Hapjeong?

  • Anyone searching for a jjokgalbi spot among Hapjeong or Sangsu restaurants
  • Anyone weighing options for a group meal in Hapjeong or Hongdae
  • Anyone who wants pork ribs with adjustable spice levels
  • Anyone who prefers pre-grilled meat that's easy to finish off
  • Anyone who likes a BBQ place with a wide range of side dishes

How to find Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch and its open-air patio

Champpoppo is a jjokgalbi (pork rib) specialty restaurant in the Hapjeong–Hongdae area, where you can choose between soy and seasoned flavors and adjust the spice level too. I stopped by while wandering around Hongdae for a dinner meetup.

There are plenty of regular pork rib joints and charcoal-grill chains around Hapjeong and Hongdae, but compared to those, Champpoppo stood out for two things: the meat comes pre-grilled so it's easy to eat, and the store has a Hapjeong open-air seating setup where the doors slide open. Unlike typical fully indoor BBQ spots, this one lets you feel the breeze once the weather turns mild — a place with real seasonal atmosphere among Hapjeong BBQ restaurants.

It's a 3-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 6, and an 8-minute walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1, so it's easy to reach from either station. There's no parking on-site, so I'd recommend using the nearby Hapjeong public parking lot.

Inside the restaurant and seating for groups

Champpoppo has a retro-feeling interior with a touch of upscale polish. It's a space that clearly cares about both taste and design, so it also worked well as a date spot. In particular, the Hapjeong open-air seats where the doors open up seemed like they'd be especially popular now that the weather has warmed up.

Table seating arranged for groups

They flexibly arrange seating for groups of 6, 8, or more depending on headcount, so it's a good fit for anything from a small meal to a company dinner or family gathering. Reservations are possible on weekdays as well as weekends and holidays, so if you need group seating or a private booking, it's worth inquiring ahead.

Menu and prices at this Hapjeong Station pork rib restaurant

The main jjokgalbi menu comes in 300g portions across soy, seasoned, and extra-spicy versions. Seasoned costs ₩1,000 more. Beyond jjokgalbi, you can also order galmaegisal (skirt steak), seasoned galmaegisal, pork skin, and boneless grilled chicken feet — Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch really has a wide range of sides.

Among those, the Poppo cream pasta seems to be the signature side — I bet it's amazing with the seasoned jjokgalbi. There's also cheese bomb steamed egg, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), grandma's doenjang rice bowl, tear gas rice ball, tuna mayo rice ball, soft tofu ramen, yeolmu kimchi noodles, spicy kaljjaebi, plain kaljjaebi, chicken porridge, and corn cheese. Corkage is also available for a ₩10,000 fee.

Table set up with grill before ordering

What I ordered that day was soy jjokgalbi, seasoned jjokgalbi, extra-spicy seasoned jjokgalbi, cheese bomb steamed egg, and tuna mayo rice ball. All five together came to ₩54,000 — but if you just get one or two jjokgalbi types with a single side, you can eat well for around ₩20,000 a person. Sharing among a group lets you try a much wider variety.

What comes with the meal: pork skin, corn cheese and chicken porridge

Pork skin, corn cheese, and chicken porridge all came included as a basic setting, so even just the sides felt satisfying.

Soy jjokgalbi, 14,000 won

The soy jjokgalbi (pork ribs aged in a special soy sauce, packed with juices, ₩14,000) had the meat pulling apart softly along its grain right from the first pick of the chopsticks. True to the description of being aged in special soy sauce, the surface was coated with sweetness — biting into it, a gentle sweetness came first rather than saltiness, followed by a deep rush of juices.

Seasoned jjokgalbi and the extra-spicy version: how hot is it?

The seasoned jjokgalbi (pork ribs coated in a spicy sauce with a strong smoky char, ₩15,000) definitely had that smoky-grilled flavor. The spicy sauce was thickly coated on the outside, so with the first bite, smoky flavor and heat spread through at once,

and the extra-spicy seasoned jjokgalbi (an even spicier version with full smoky heat, ₩15,000) took it up one more notch — but even for someone who can't handle spice well, it only registered as slightly spicy, so it was easy to enjoy without pressure. With so many flavor options, it was fun picking according to mood.

It's listed as 300g including bone weight, but in practice the portion felt generous. Since it's pre-grilled for 15 minutes before serving, all you have to do is lightly warm it up before eating right away — which was especially convenient for the seasoned ribs, since sauced meat tends to burn easily if you grill it yourself from raw.

Cheese bomb steamed egg and tuna mayo rice ball, 5,000 won each

The cheese bomb steamed egg (₩5,000) came out fluffy and puffed up, making a good pairing between bites of the spicy ribs, and the tuna mayo rice ball (₩5,000) was savory and salty enough that my hand kept reaching for it.

Table with jjokgalbi and sides all laid out together

The owner was also very kind. I'd just come from a one-day tiramisu class, and without me saying anything, they asked first whether I wanted something refrigerated, and even when I just glanced toward the back for a moment, they came right over to ask if I needed anything. That attentive service kept the whole meal feeling comfortable.

The best way to order at Champpoppo Jjokgalbi

If I had to pick a combo that never fails, I'd say order both the soy and seasoned jjokgalbi together and alternate between them, then move on to the extra-spicy version once you're craving heat. Going back and forth between sweet and spicy keeps things from getting boring, all the way to the end.

What was good, what fell short, and the verdict

👍 What I liked

  • 3-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 6, also reachable from Sangsu Station
  • Pre-grilled setup that makes cooking easy and stress-free
  • Choice of soy, seasoned, and extra-spicy flavors to suit your taste
  • Interior that balances retro charm with an upscale feel
  • A wide range of sides, with pork skin, corn cheese, and chicken porridge included as standard
  • Attentive, kind service from the owner

👀 What fell short

  • No parking at the restaurant itself, so check nearby public lots
  • Portion weight includes bone, so it's worth confirming actual meat amount before ordering

🧾 Overall verdict — Champpoppo turned out to be a Hapjeong jjokgalbi spot that covers both taste and convenience. Thanks to the pre-grilling, it was easy to cook comfortably, and with soy, seasoned, and extra-spicy options, there was plenty of variety to enjoy by preference. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for restaurants near Hapjeong or Sangsu Station — it works well for a group dinner or a date alike.
