1-hour wait for the fire-set pork ribs at Champpoppo in Hapjeong

In short

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a charcoal pork rib restaurant in the middle of Hapjeong's restaurant alley in Mapo, Seoul. After an hour-long wait, the writer ordered the fire-set (최루탄세트, 51,000 won) with pork ribs, steamed egg, and rice balls, in a soy-to-sauce ratio of 1 to 2, plus the generous free sides of chicken porridge, pork skin, and potatoes. Switching between soy and sauce ribs kept every bite exciting, making the wait completely worth it.

The place was already packed with customers when we arrived. This is clearly a popular spot, I thought right away,,,! It's right in the middle of Hapjeong's restaurant alley, so it's perfect for round one of ribs before heading to round two at a bar nearby (⸝⸝๑ ̫ ๑⸝⸝⸝)

We couldn't get in right away either — we waited about an hour before being seated,,,🔥 But there's plenty to look at and do nearby, so we strolled around thinking about where to go for round two, took some photobooth pictures, and the time flew by. With all that anticipation built up from waiting, we finally went in ꒰ᐡ ›⸝⸝⸝‹ ᐡ꒱

Menu lineup and ordering

Menu board for jjokgalbi sets at Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi has a variety of menu items centered on jjokgalbi! Beyond the basic ribs, there are options to suit different tastes, so it's great for groups where everyone can order what they like. Note that the basic order starts at 3 servings of ribs!

Looking at reviews, a lot of people order the pasta set that comes with cream pasta ,,,! I was torn, but since I'm Korean to the bone,,,rice runs in my blood, I went with the fire-set that comes with rice balls and steamed egg ♡

The free sides: chicken porridge, pork skin, potatoes

They brought out the basic sides one by one ꉂꉂ(˃▿˂๑)

A bowl of free chicken porridge served as a side
Light chicken porridge eaten as an appetizer

This is the first jjokgalbi place I've ever been to that gives you chicken porridge for free ,,, It's savory and light, the kind of taste that settles your stomach. It's the perfect appetizer before diving into the bold flavors of the ribs, not too seasoned haha

Charcoal-grilled pork skin served as a free side

Potatoes and pork skin also came as free sides ?! I'd seen so many reviews saying the pork skin was so good people ended up ordering it as an extra dish, so I was looking forward to it `⁽˙ᵕ˙⁾´

One bite in and I immediately thought about ordering more pork skin,,, it was chewy with a nice bounce, and since it's grilled over charcoal,,,the subtle smoky flavor said it all! The potatoes tasted like a mild version of Poca chips, if I had to describe it! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ It was so interesting that just grilling them gave them a Poca chip flavor ˆ> ₃ <ˆ

Plate of free side dishes eaten while waiting for the first grilling

First grilling takes 15 minutes

At Champpoppo, Hapjeong's jjokgalbi spot, the first grilling starts as soon as you order! They say the first grilling process takes about 15 minutes. I was really hungry and starving, but thanks to the hearty free sides, I managed to hold out ᕑᗢᓫ Since they pre-grill it for you, you don't have to grill it much before eating, which is actually great!

A full plate of the fire-set's soy and sauce jjokgalbi

Fire-set (for 2–3 people), ₩51,000, soy 1 : sauce 2

🍖 Fire-set (for 2–3 people) 🍖 💸 ₩51,000 💸 comes with pork ribs + steamed egg + rice balls. Since I prefer the sauce version, I ordered a ratio of soy 1 to sauce 2. Just looking at it made my mouth water ,,, and getting to try both sauce and soy ribs in one order was even better! Now let's get into actually tearing into the ribs ( ˶ᵔᵕᵔ˶و)و ”

The golden grilling time

Grill in order from soy to sauce, bone side down, for about 2–3 minutes until the bone side is done, then flip and grill for another 30 seconds — that's the golden time for the best flavor! If you grill too long the fat drips away and the taste drops, so remember that and enjoy it at its very best ٩(⸝⸝・༥ ・⸝⸝)و

Soy sauce jjokgalbi

Honestly, an unreal-looking dish ,,, the bone and meat were already loosened enough that even a three-year-old could probably grab the bone and tear into it themselves 🦴

Anyway, holding the ribs, thanks for the meal~~~ ( ᐙ ) Taking a big bite of the soy ribs, the salty-and-mildly-sweet soy seasoning had soaked well between the bites of meat. After the saltiness comes a subtle umami, and with the smoky charcoal flavor added, it was clean yet addictive.

Dipping it in the spicy sauce made it even more special,,,🌶️ The meat was so plump, chewy but never tough, and picking it up bone in hand to tear off piece by piece was genuinely fun ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-

Sauce jjokgalbi

Next up, sauce ribs — get on the grill right now.

At first, the deep color of the sauce made me worry it might be too sweet or too spicy, but once I tried it, it was a chunk of umami — a sauce flavor that never gets tiring… The outside was grilled golden with a slightly chewy texture, and the inside was soft, so tearing it off the bone was just as fun.

Sauce jjokgalbi paired with curry powder

Even if you were worried about the sauce ribs being too sweet, this is a flavor you can enjoy without hesitation! It has a different charm from the soy version, so switching between the two kept things interesting without ever getting tiring. Honestly, this was the best jjokgalbi I've ever had ( •̀ ̫ -︎︎ )✩

Sauce ribs plus curry powder was my personal favorite combo!

Steamed egg topped with cheddar cheese

Cheesy bomb steamed egg and rice balls

The steamed egg topped with cheddar cheese 🧀 was great to eat in between bites — it mellowed out the spiciness and felt soft and comforting, so I kept going back for more ˃ᴗ❛。 It's a crowd-pleasing flavor with no downsides, so it felt clean and easy.

Bite-sized rice balls included in the set

The rice balls that come with the set made me really glad I ordered this menu ,,, 🍚 They look like nothing special, but they're a side you absolutely can't do without. Rolled into neat bite-sized portions, eating them together with the ribs gave a perfect sweet-and-salty combo (•̀᎑-)

Final verdict — was the 1-hour wait worth it?

Since I waited almost an hour to eat here, my expectations were pretty high, but I never once felt like the wait was a waste! Most of all, switching between soy and sauce instead of sticking to just one flavor meant I never got tired of it and enjoyed every bite till the end. The free sides were also generous, which made the wait feel worthwhile 🤭

If you're looking for a place in Hapjeong to eat until you're full while having a drink, Champpoppo Jjokgalbi, a must-visit jjokgalbi spot in Hapjeong, is definitely worth stopping by. I think I'll come back next time I'm craving jjokgalbi in Hapjeong.
