Jongno 3-ga bakery: injeolmi, black sesame and coffee bread at Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul, just behind the Ikseon-dong hanok village. Arriving at the 11am opening, the writer picked from the full lineup and tasted injeolmi bread, black sesame bread for the first time, and coffee bread, and the soft crumb and fragrant cream of Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread stood out most. It is a hard-to-skip takeout stop whenever you are in Ikseon-dong.

A regular bread stop behind Ikseon-dong hanok village

I'm a total bread lover, and there are a few bakeries in Seoul I genuinely adore. One of them is Munhwa Bakery, famous as the Ikseon-dong bakery. Whenever I'm in Ikseon-dong or Jongno, this is a must-visit stop haha. Today I was in Jongno 3-ga and couldn't pass it by, so off to Munhwa Bakery I went~

Where is Munhwa Bakery and what are its hours?

It's open from 11am to 8pm with no closed days. Munhwa Bakery sits near Ikseon-dong hanok village. Step out of the busy heart of the hanok village and it's right there. My go-to route is: walk around Ikseon-dong, eat a meal, then stop by Munhwa Bakery for bread lol. If you buy bread here and share it with people around you, it disappears in an instant. Everyone always says it's delicious~

Directions to Munhwa Bakery near Ikseon-dong hanok village

If you're coming by subway, get off at Jongno 3-ga Station (lines 1, 3, and 5) and take Exit 6 or 7. With three subway lines running through it, access is really easy. It's also very close from the station, which is probably why I end up here so often. Walk just a little from Jongno 3-ga Station and you'll see Munhwa Bakery right on your left~ There's a standing 'bread' sign out front that makes it even easier to spot.

Munhwa Bakery's exterior is modeled on a traditional Korean tiled roof, so it really stands out and looks so pretty even from outside.

Since it's a Jongno 3-ga bakery in a neighborhood popular with foreign visitors, I see a lot of foreign customers here too.

Always crowded with customers~ a popular Ikseon-dong bakery.

Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that same day, and I heard that any unsold bread is donated to underprivileged groups like children who lack meals, seniors living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters, and social welfare facilities. Such a kind bakery! This Jongno 3-ga bakery even won an award in the 2024 Korea Consumer Industry Evaluation~ No wonder it's so famous and so good.

What bread is on the shelves right at the 11am opening?

Breads baked in-house at Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery bakes everything in-house, which I think is exactly why it tastes so good. Walking in, I was hit with this intoxicating smell of freshly baked bread haha.

They open at 11am, and you really need to get there early — otherwise a lot of the breads sell out. Usually there are two staff members, but on this day there was just one. Probably because I did an opening run haha. I've shown up late before and missed out on breads I wanted, so this time I went early. Every visit, always a good bread show haha.

So many different breads on display. Here's a video of the Munhwa Bakery breads.

Munhwa Bakery was also running a Naver receipt review event — write a photo review and you get a salt bread as a gift, apparently. Make sure to join in and grab your salt bread!

Garlic bread and coffee bread at Munhwa Bakery

Garlic bread is ₩6,800. It's popular enough to be called Munhwa Bakery's signature bread. I'd already tried it of course. The garlic and butter flavors are really intense, and the inside is moist — it's the undisputed top of the garlic bread world. A lot of people are obsessed with this one haha. Walnut bread is ₩3,500, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Coffee bread is the whole reason I came here today. I honor this bread haha. It's genuinely, seriously delicious. Its English name is cappuccino bread apparently. It's the kind of bread you don't want to share with anyone and just eat alone.

There was also peanut bread and injeolmi bread (sweet rice cake bread).

There was also mugwort rice cake bread and cheese bread. The cheese bread had a sample out at the counter, so I tried it — the bread was chewy and the cheese was savory and salty, totally my type.

There was also squid ink condensed milk bread, sweet potato bread, and an onion bagel. The onion bagel had a crisp shell and the onion-flavored cream cheese was fragrant without being heavy. I also spotted black sesame bread and milk cream bread.

There was also white red-bean bread, rice-chestnut loaf, and rice-cheese loaf. I tried the chestnut loaf too — it's packed with chestnuts and the bread itself is chewy, so I'd recommend it.

They packed it into a paper bag for me~ I kept it simple and left with just three.

Tasting injeolmi, black sesame and coffee bread

I picked black sesame bread, injeolmi bread, and coffee bread.

Injeolmi bread with injeolmi cream and red bean paste

Injeolmi bread is soft bread packed full of injeolmi (sweet rice cake) cream and red bean paste. The injeolmi powder gives it a nutty flavor and the red bean paste is sweet, so if you like injeolmi, I'd highly recommend it~~

What does Munhwa Bakery's black sesame bread taste like?

Black sesame bread, bought for the first time.

Black sesame bread coated in black sesame powder

The outside is thickly coated in black sesame powder, so it's really nutty, and the cream inside wasn't too sweet. The bread itself was soft and fluffy and delicious.

My most beloved coffee bread~~ why doesn't anyone sell this in my neighborhood, ugh.

This is exactly why I consider this an Ikseon-dong bakery worth vouching for!! If you see this bread, you have to get it. It's really, truly delicious. The bread is incredibly soft, and the coffee cream has a fragrant coffee aroma without being overdone — the cream isn't greasy either, and wow... it feels like drinking a really good cup of coffee~~ This bread deserves an award haha.

A bakery worth ending an Ikseon-dong date at

Sitting right next to Ikseon-dong hanok village, this is a great bakery to stop by after an Ikseon-dong date. Everything here is delicious, but the coffee bread and garlic baguette are on a level of their own. Close to Jongno 3-ga Station and easy to find — that's Munhwa Bakery~~
