Nut-topped sweet potato bread at a Seosullo-gil bakery: Munhwa Bakery
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout bakery in Jongno, Seoul, on Seosullo-gil, the alley that runs from Ikseon-dong toward Changgyeonggung Palace. From its lineup of breads made with traditional Korean ingredients, the sweet potato bread, walnut bread and cheese bread went into the takeout bag, and the sweet potato bread paired a nutty topping with a sweet filling. Come to Munhwa Bakery in the morning if you want a choice of the popular breads.

I'm a bread girl and today I wanted bread again. Judging by the crowds, I'm not the only one — Ikseon-dong always smells like a neighborhood full of people. I heard there was a famous bakery along Seosullo-gil, the alley from Ikseon-dong toward Changgyeonggung Palace, so I went to check it out.

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours?
[Munhwa Bakery] Address: 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea Hours: Mon–Sat 11:00–19:00 (closes when bread sells out) Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) — I love the name. It sounds like a cross between "cultural heritage" and "bread."

It's about a 3-minute walk from Exit 6 of Jongno 3-ga Station. Walking along the main road toward Changgyeonggung Palace, you'll spot a hanok-style storefront with "bread" written on it — that's Munhwa Bakery.

Takeout only: how the bread is laid out at Munhwa Bakery
Small but solid, this Ikseon-dong bakery favorite is takeout-only and lets in two parties at a time. I was impressed by how hard they were working to keep the interior clean.

Inside, the mouthwatering breads were neatly kept in a glass display case, and pre-ordered breads were already wrapped in plastic for pickup. The shop was genuinely spotless. The menu is mostly built around traditional Korean ingredients, so there's a lineup that people of any age would enjoy.

Chewy mugwort rice cake bread, nutty peanut bread, and an onion bagel loaded with cream cheese — lots of options for all ages. The nutty-looking black sesame bread was tempting too. From what I saw, the best-seller here is the coffee bread, with a fragrant coffee aroma and a soft, fluffy castella texture that made it especially appealing.

By afternoon, only one or two of the popular breads were left
Sweet potato bread, walnut bread, cheese bread, mugwort rice cake bread, milk cream bread, hotteok (sweet pancake) bread, coffee bread, and the most popular of all — garlic bread! The lineup reminded me a lot of Mandong Bakery, one of my favorites in Yeonnam-dong, so I was pleased. The glossy garlic bread was kept warm right on its tray. Injeolmi (rice cake) bread and peanut bread were also clearly popular.
Since I came in the afternoon, only one or two of each popular bread were left. If you want to try everything, I'd recommend an morning visit. The onion bagel looked amazing too — packed with so much cream it was practically overflowing — and it was also nearly sold out, a sign of how popular it is.
I went with the sweet potato bread, plus walnut bread and cheese bread — got 'em! Next time I want to try the chestnut bread too; it's made with rice, which somehow makes it feel more wholesome, and it seems like the kind of thing older folks would love. The coffee bread was long and generously filled, too — good stuff. There were samples out, so if you're curious about a bread, you can taste it before buying. Once you tell the staff which breads you want, they wrap each one neatly and pack it all into a paper bag.

Munhwa Bakery slices your bread and packs it fresh right on the spot, which makes it even more enjoyable to eat!

They also have rice-based loaf bread, which seems like something older generations would enjoy too.

What the nut-topped sweet potato bread tasted like at home
Back home, I tried the sweet potato bread first. It has a nutty topping on top, so the first bite gave a nutty flavor before the sweetness — a nice touch that made Munhwa Bakery's sweet potato bread stand out. Inside is a generous, moderately sweet sweet potato filling, perfect as a snack. And the paper bag looks pretty stylish too, doesn't it?
This is a neighborhood where Jongmyo Shrine and Changdeokgung Palace sit close by. Take in some cultural heritage, then treat yourself to Munhwa Bakery's delicious bread — sounds like killing two birds with one stone.
