Jongno 3-ga bakery for cheese bagel toast at home: Munhwa Bakery

This is a bakery I stopped by while on a date with a friend in Ikseon-dong — even the name has that traditional feel that matches the mood of Jongno 3-ga. The exterior looked like a hanok too, which made it really pretty :) It's a hanok bakery set in a neighborhood that leans into the Korean aesthetic.

Munhwa Bakery runs on a same-day-baked, same-day-sold principle, so everything is fresh. Any bread that doesn't sell that day gets donated — to elderly people living alone, free meal centers for people with disabilities, homeless shelters, and other welfare facilities. A bakery that does good! It's already become a well-known Jongno 3-ga bakery, loved by a lot of people :)

Since it's a takeout-only shop, the interior is kept simple — just a bread display case and a checkout counter. It's clean and minimal, with wood tones and warm lighting throughout, which gave it a nice, cozy atmosphere.

One of Munhwa Bakery's signatures — the garlic bread!! It's slathered with garlic cream, and you could smell the garlic wafting off it.

Sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread, walnut bread — a lot of these were priced in the ₩3,000s, so wallet-friendly :) If a Seoul café sold bread like this, the price would probably be double, so Munhwa Bakery is definitely one of those places with great value — good prices and good quality both.

There were also injeolmi (rice cake) bread, peanut bread, and mugwort rice cake bread — good gift options for older relatives. I visited around 2:30pm and some of the popular items were already sold out!! You could really feel how popular this Jongno 3-ga bakery is, haha.

Packing garlic bread and a cheese bagel to go

What I ended up ordering was the signature garlic bread and a cheese bagel. I couldn't resist that sweet-salty garlic smell, haha.

The garlic bread is loaded with garlic cream, so the garlic flavor really comes through strong.

They individually wrap each piece and put everything in a paper bag, so it's easy to take out comfortably.

That sweet-salty combo is so appealing! It was great for getting a full hit of rich garlic flavor.

The cream was piled on so thick it was almost too soft — you could tell they don't skimp on ingredients. Then, the cheese bagel!! The way the cheese had melted on the outside really stood out.

I decided to turn the cheese bagel into toast!! I cut the bread in half to make toast, and—

Once I cut it open, wow, the cheese was really packed in tight. Cheese on the outside, and plenty of savory cheese on the inside too — a cheese bagel that really lets you taste that savory cheese flavor. I'd definitely recommend this cheese bagel to anyone who loves cheese.

I had it with a vegetable-fried egg and ketchup, and it was genuinely delicious, haha. The bread itself had a nice soft texture!! Everything Munhwa Bakery sells is made with good ingredients, so quality-wise you really can't go wrong with any item. And knowing the owner also does good deeds makes it an even better place to visit. I'll definitely stop by again next time I'm in Jongno :)
